I was playing ACNH for a couple hours in a row today, and my switch started blowing hot air out of the vent on the top and making a sound, it felt a little warm too. Now I was outside for a while and it’s pretty warm today. But it didn’t feel overly hot to the touch. Is this anything to worry about or is it just the switch cooling itself?

Happened to me yesterday, it's just trying to cool off, so when you hold the switch it won't be too hot for you. In other words it's normal.

The hot air blowing out is just the fans pushing the hot air out. The Switch and most computers can handle a very high amount of heat before you have to worry about anything. If you play it in extreme heat there might be a small chance of it shutting off from overheating, but it's generally quite safe and nothing to worry about :)

When it was about 30°C or more here the switch was also blowing very hard and got very hot. It can handle it but I don't like to take the risk for too long. So just to be sure I take a break sometimes and let it cool. If you can get the airstream from an airconditioner to the switch this would also help a lot.

Thanks! Yeah it was running pretty hard so I just turned it off and will play again in 20 minutes or so. Just never seen that happen before

I think that's normal, just like your laptop, the fan will on making the noise when it's overheated

happens to me all the time, i sometimes just put it on sleep mode and give it a 5 minute breather

As others have said, the switch's fans blow faster when it get on the warmer side. I wouldn't think it's anything to worry too much about, unless it gets excessively hot. I have a launch day switch that has the fans blowing every single time I play Breath of the Wild handheld, and it hasn't created any major issues over the years. I would only suggest giving your switch a break to cool off every now and then, or finding ways to keep it cool. I tend to move closer to the air conditioner whenever my switch gets hot lol, seems to help a little.

When you're playing handheld be mindful of how you hold it. It's very easy to accidentally cover the air intake vents because these are on the back/bottom of the Switch, so if you rest it against your clothing or a blanket while playing then this can block it and cause it to get hotter.

My Switch occasionally gets really hot, but it's only whenever I leave it on for several hours at a time. I haven't run into any issues with the game crashing as a result of my Switch becoming so hot that it can't function, but I will admit that it does become quite noisy.

Yeah, I had the loud sounds and heating. I don't think this is the firat game to get it hot but it was the first time for the weird sounds.

Yeah I get this occasionally if I’ve been playing for a long time. Also if I play it on top of cloth like a pillow. It’s normal.

My switch usually gets hot after playing for a long time! I try to make sure to store it in a cool place and leave the vent holes unobstructed to cool off after/during use.

It’s normal, happens on any device when you play a game sometimes.
And yes, my switch heats up when I play NH.

always. yeah that's prolly why my lite broke ): sucks bc the save file is only saved on the switch with nh, smh

I thought I was the only one :0 My switch gets so hot when I play that my fingers actually kind of burn if I touch the back. My husband never had that issue and I was worried it was a fault with my Let's Go Pokemon switch but reading this thread, I do rest the bottom of my switch on my tummy as I pay in bed.

Yeah this happens to me as well a lot, generally only when I play Animal Crossing too.

Kinda weird because when I play Botw it usually never gets hot, but I’d think it’d be a more technically demanding game then New Horizons lol.
