Amiibo question

So i recently came back from a hiatus only to realize marshall left when i was absent which broke my heart. Normally i know you have to cycle 16 villagers before you can have them in your town again but numerous people have told me that you can cheat that with amiibos. So anywho, my friend jordan added me to this twitter chat with some people who play acnl too and one was kind enough to offer to scan marshall in and let me adopt him and when i tried i couldn't. So my question is, does anyone know if amiibos can actually cancel the 16 villager cycle out or do you have to scan them in yourself for it or something?

If you want Marshal to get back in your town without 16 cycling thing then you should scan Marshsl's amiibo card by yourself.. Scanning in other players is not working tho.

You have to scan Marshal into your own copy of the game, unfortunately. A fast way to cycle out 16 villagers, scan and invite a villager in via amiibo. Once that villager has moved in, kick the villager out with another amiibo. Rinse and repeat.

Like the other people said, you have to have the amiibo card yourself in order to bypass the 16-villager cycle. I definitely recommend buying packs/individual cards of villagers you like though, because it definitely makes leaving your game for awhile less scary.
