Hi guys I would like to ask some help with smash brothers. I have a few questions so I hope someone can answer them. Im really new to the game so pls pardon my being noob :( I own the 3DS version btw

1. I noticed you can jump with the control stick UP and also jump with X and Y. Which button do you usually use because by reflex I jump with the Y button so it is easier to double jump. I was wondering if you guys use the control stick UP or am I doing it wrong?

2. I am having some difficulty grabbing my foes and throwing them. after I grab them do i press the direction and A button or am I doing it wrong? (I realized I can practice using training but maybe you guys have pointers)

3. Is there an ideal percentage when I can smash the opponent so they die? I usually try smashing when they are at 80%..

thank you so much for answering my noob questions :D

I use Y to jump, but that's just easier for me IMO
when you grab, you push the circle pad on the direction you want to throw them
ideal percentage for smashing really depends on the move you are using Example villagers tree and jigglypuffs rest can kill at 60% while other moves like villagers llyod can only kill at 90%

gee thanks I also use the Y button and I thought only noobs do that since it makes your thumb leave the a or b buttons which increases reflex time to smash. It is difficult to double jump with the circle pad though and maybe I need more practice to make it work.

when i throw...i grab the opponent with L shoulder then just the direction of the circle pad? i also end up pressing the A button with it (I am so noob sorry.)

thanks for answering my questions

I use the stick for regular jumping, and the buttons for short-hopping

you only need to push a direction for a grab throw. the physical attack button (or pressing the grab button) again will do a pummel move

kill % varies depending on each fighter's % (due to the inclusion of rage in Sm4sh), who you're fighting, and the move you're using (as well as the freshness of said move). though generally at least 100% is potential death-percentage for anyone with the right attack

oh yeah maybe i can do that too. stick for regular then add the y button if i double jump :D

thanks so much :D hope I can play with you guys real soon :D

I dunno if you'll need it but you can turn on the hitboxes by tapping the character on the bottom screen. It's useful for characters like zelda that use a teleporting up b so you can track where they are at least that's what I use it for. I also find it easier for grabs and stuff

Huh, I didn't even know of this.

Though it's really not quite a hitbox. More of just a marker.

thanks so much :D im really still starting.. and i think i only won 1 time on online smash with a Pikachu haha. hope I get more wins :D

curious, have you tried experimenting with different characters to find the one that suits your playstyle the most?

since Smash is pretty super diverse in how characters all play. so if you're having trouble with one, maybe try switching to another and see if they click with you more? then once you've got your main figured out, you can work on becoming more proficient with them

of course it is still a good idea to be at least somewhat decent with everyone, especially if you plan on getting full completion (and especially if no hammers). but having at least one character you're super good with compared to the rest is obviously a huge plus

I use x for characters like jigglypuff and Kirby because I always mess up with the stick.
For ppl like villager, yoshi and basically everyone that doesn't do more than a double jump I use the stick.

And everyone else answered ur other questions so ya

Just be good and not bad yeah.

Alright so for real, I would reccomend the stick if your on stage, it helps you by still having good control on A and B. And when your offstage try using the Y button when your on top on them, this will make you perform a attack called "Footstool", if you land this it counts as an extra jump to your 1 offstage jump and makes the opponent helpless for a second and half. If this happens to characters like Mario, it can take them down. Also yes, do aim for attacking at 80 percent.

I really improved using these advice :D (I was beaten by the master core and given up on that for a while) thanks so much guys :D

im really good with Pikachu, Link and the villager :D (or i just think I am :D) I was able to unlock all the characters too! Will probably buy the DLCS soon :D

you should set a goal to clear the clear 9.0 classic challenge

funny, its the opposite for me

buttons for normal jumping with characters that have more than 2 regular jumps just feels completely weird. esp when I'm trying to aerial also

yeah probably should do that :D im still a bit scared of the master core so Ill probably practice some more so i can combo it to death :D (im still just using standard smash attacks to kill it)

Smash attacks or some other hard hitting move is honestly probably the best for anything not the clone core fight

its more just a game of knowing how to read and dodge his attacks than anything else

though keep in mind you can stack customs too, to potentially make it easier while still clearing the challenge
