So I have finally decided to restart my town, I just wanted to know all the different things to consider when choosing my new town.
What are all the different things you can get? I know about fruit and grass. I heard the train station can be a different colour. Is there anything else i should check out too?
Also what are you frustrations with your town? Is there any pros and cons where re-tail and the campsite end up being? What about rivers too? Hahaa sorry for all the questions!
Anything and everything will all be advice i need

There's also rocks and ponds - placement and number of them. Those are things you can't change later, so you'll want to make sure they're not in your way for however you want to design your town.

The only things that bother me is when there's too many ponds, the river winds around too much which makes it longer (the longer it is, the less land space you have to use), and when there's areas that are too small to use well. An example of areas too small to use is when the river is near the top of the map in some parts and makes the usable land above it really thin.

ahhh yes i completely forgot to put about ponds, its the main reason im choosing to restart. I have 3 ponds right outside the train station! Iv had this town since the game was released, and i never knew about all these things haha i just rushed into it n never thought about it lol Also im in desperate need of a new town name lol My 20 year old self could not come up with anything better than the town i was living in at the time :'D

I hate having too many ponds, also like Dj said the little strip of land where the river starts at the top is not pleasant to me. You can always change the color of your train station once you have 100 visitors. I wish I would've picked a town that had the retail and town hall closer to the train but oh well.

I chose my layout because the retail was pretty much in the exact middle of the town. I can access it easily from anywhere in the town to make things much more convenient. Other than that, it's mainly just personal preference. Everybody likes like different stuff.

Just for reference on grass and train station colors. c:
For grass:
Triangle (Square in winter)
Circle (Star in winter)
Square (Circle in winter)

The Train station can be red, green, blue and brown.
And the town hall can be different colors too, I believe? Here's a picture, since I'm not too sure how to explain.. X);

Where the re-tail is, is mostly up to your preference. I had mine by the beach, easier for making runs back and forth. If you're planning on having a lot of visitors for trading bells and such, it might be easier to have it closer to the train station.

What DJStarstryker mentioned about rivers is important. I actually came to say just that. ^^; In one of my previous towns, I had a long winding river, and there was so little space.. I ended up resetting because of that.
I've actually had villagers plot in the areas where the usable land was thinner.

Some people are okay with villagers moving in spots like that, but it bothers me a bit. X);

For campsites, I'm rather pleased with where mine is. I put mine near the cliffs by the beach. Doesn't really get in the way much. If you're 100% not sure if you'll be pleased where it is, maybe place down paths, so you know where you'll be walking?

Thanks so much for the advice and pictures! Its really helped a lot for when i start the hunt for my perfect town :D

I like to have a river as straight as possible. It makes hunting fish easy. You'll want your rocks in places that won't bug you when you're trying to build houses or public works projects. Ponds too, for that matter.

Grass can be shaped like circles, squares, or triangles. In that order, snow will show up as either stars, hexagons, or squares. This is purely aesthetic. Location of town hall and plaza is also up to personal preference, as is the color of your train station, which can be blue, red, green, or a rustic brown.

Fruit can be either apples, oranges, cherries, peaches, or pears. Depending on the town fruit, only perfect fruit of that type can grow. It's up to you what you find most delicious and/or visually appealing.

When it comes to Re-tail, personally, I like to have it close to main street. Having it close to the beach can be nice, too, however. Makes it easy to sell fish and shells, or for trips to the island to be a bit more profitable with less time wasted running to and from the dock and all the way to Re-tail. Mind where you plan on building your house, too, in relation to it.

And for beaches, remember that there'll always be a separation between the two beaches by a waterfall, and two entrances to the beach. However, sometimes both entrances will be to the same beach, meaning you won't be able to access the "hidden" beach until you have a wetsuit.

I personally like having a few ponds, it makes it easier to divide the town.
You can always look at the "post your town map" thread for extra reference of other's towns and their opinions about them.
Good luck finding your perfect map! :D

There are a few things about my town that really bother me. I hate the placement of some of the rocks, but tbh I feel like it's nearly impossible to get a town where all of your rocks are going to be out of the way. For the most part, I've been able to work around my rocks.
I also really regret putting my campsite in the south of my town. I didn't realize you can't plant pine trees in the southern part of your town, so I've had to settle for a normal tree forest around it instead.
The last thing that I have an issue with in my town is that the river creates too many small strips of land. I thought I would love having a very bendy river but now it's hard to do much with those 2 areas on the edges of my map.
My Re-Tail isn't in the southern part of my town, it's more towards the middle, however, I've been able to compensate for that with a well-placed bridge, and now it's almost a straight shoot to my dock which isn't so bad.
If you plan on putting paths in, just keep an eye out for areas where it might be hard to fit the path in and make it look right.

Thankyou all! its given me a lot to think about! And i cant wait to start now :D I have about 2 weeks to wait as Im borrowing my sisters game and ds to transfer my items and my fav villagers. Thank god i have a few amiibo cards that i can force out my favs to live in my sisters town for the time being haha

I personally don't care much about train station colors or town hall colors or shapes in the grass/snow those kind of things aren't noticeable for me so in my eyes the perfect map is the straightest river you can find with retail in the middle of the map so its close to the beach dock and all the stores at the top...my old town use to have a PERFECT map unfortunately that town got reset (by accident) I didn't have much progress on it thankfully but I do miss that map because it was actually flawless LOL I loved it !
