Adopted villager came wearing an offensive custom design

Someone, please, I need help!
I recently bought Judy, one of my dreamies, from another person. Initially, everything was fine. her house was is its original state, and nothing is in her wardrobe! But, a few days later, I find her walking around with a custom knit sweater design that said "DUMB *****" in bold letters on the front. I've talked to Isabelle multiple times, but she keeps putting it back on! I'm not sure if giving her regular clothes will make her stop wearing it, and I've been too afraid to give her something she doesn't look good in to try it. So far the only solution I've come up with is putting white t-shirts all over the able sisters hoping that she might replace the offensive one with that? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm really sad about it... It just breaks my heart knowing someone did this to her.

I’m so sorry, that sounds really unpleasant and upsetting. It bothers me to think you paid someone for her while they withheld this piece of info. Hopefully at least not intentionally.

I do think that if you gift her clothes (just a few items) it’ll decrease the times she puts on that shirt. Do you have anything she’d look nice in? I bet you could find some great outfits! Try not to be too sad—this is a chance to help her after all, and I’m sure you’ll rise to the challenge!

there's another thread where people talk about this here ): the reporting feature only seems to work temporarily, so in the thread there's a link to report it to nintendo. otherwise, some people are just trying to gift the villager enough clothing that it will cycle out the bad outfit.

You can also go to Harv's cabin to try clothes on her before you gift them to her. She will have a style and color she prefers, so watch out for what she likes and try to gift her more of those items.

Thanks for your encouragement everyone... I'm just a little worried she'll be wearing it forever! I'll try giving her some clothes that might look good on her. Also, does anyone know about the mechanics behind the custom designs? Like, can they have multiple custom designs in their wardrobe or only one? I'm currently looking to hopefully replace it with a white t-shirt custom design I made. What can I do to get her to wear it?

So they are not guessing. Judy likes Cute and Elegant items that are Pink or White. You can look up villager information here:

So sorry to hear about this! That sort of “surprise” when adopting a villager would really upset me.

I think once you give her something she likes then she’ll wear that the majority of the time. I gave my Judy a purple magical girl dress and she wears it maybe 80% of the time. Kind of surprised she liked it so much since it’s purple instead of pink, tbh. The aesthetic of it might not be your cup of tea but I’m sure you can find something!! I do feel like the villagers prioritize things you gave them over custom designs since I have a few up in my able sisters and have only seen villagers wear them twice (this might be anecdotal though.)

If it helps, I'm reasonably sure that villagers will eventually ditch custom pattern outfits for ones displayed in your Able's. I put up my character's custom outfit up there early on without realizing everyone in town would start dressing like me, and shortly after replacing it, it started getting phased out and I don't see anyone wearing it around anymore.
