What are they trying to pull here, making her catchphrase "Ruffian"?

A ruffian is a rogue with no consideration for the law.
Or are they adding a hidden reference to drugs?

The game has 20 different dogs in its history. One goes "woo woof" while another goes "bow-WOW", but more than half of them have a catchphrase that has zero reference to what a dog would say. Surely they could have picked something much better and less offensive than "ruffian".

i agree what kind of catchphrase is ruffian ?? acnl is promoting drugs and is encouraging stealing

In all honesty, I don't see how they're trying to hide a secret reference here.
She says "ruffian" because she's a dog, not because she's a criminal >.>

Hey I can't blame you guys. Portia is a demon. You can't trust her. That's why I kicked her out of my town in Wild World. She's rude, she's nasty, she's terrible.

But in all seriousness, it was most likely just a joke. :P
(Maybe it doesn't have that harsh of a definition in Japan...? Just a guess.)

Stop going off-topic. Point is that the game has done a lot to avoid any references to offensive content. Allowing this kind of wordplay is a missed opportunity in my opinion. Ambiguity should be avoided when you operate on a world-wide scale.

I looked up a few definitions and now I think it's hilarious! "ruff?" "ruffian?" Ha! It may be a little nudge that Portia is not all that she seems...

But seriously, no kid's going to take it out of context and go rob a bank because Portia's catchphrase just happens to contain a word that relates to gangsters.

Ruffian also means untidy/unapproachable person.. could it be that because she's an arrogant snooty villager, she's also technically a ruffian? just a thought.

Don't dwell on it too much.

Hmm well, when I started playing AC WW, my first ever experience of animal crossing, I first spoke to Portia and when she kept saying "Ruffian" I thought I was being hazed as a human amongst the animals of the village, I expected the next animal to call me "peasant" or something.. ahem ..
