A very philosophical question.

I have, possibly the most philosophical question in the known universe. In ACNL, the player is mistaken for the town mayor, but who was the mayor the town was expecting?

And why hasn't the real mayor showed up?

The mayor sends you a letter at the start of the game. I guess that he or she doesn't care that someone took their job.

Sakurai. He was gonna be mayor, but since you took his job he was able to make Smash 4.

It was Blanca the faceless cat. Once she found out her job had been taken she lost her identity and roamed the land.

I remember seeing a theory about it being Rover, due to him also being on your train at the time

This is what I thought too. Maybe he started talking to you cause he thinks you'd be a good replacement mayor....

Rover: "Where are you going?
Villager: "Poopburg."
Rover: Oh, good. He's going to the same town I made up to five minutes ago. Looks like I'm free!

No, but really, I think that the mayor was supposed to be Tortimer's grandson. But Isabella found him to be too immature for the role and just picked the first random person to get off the train.

Yeah, i have always wondered too! Logically thinking about it, the real intended mayor should eventually show up, even if late, right? Yeah, all the weird things about this game, lol.

I saw a comic that had a nice story.

Basically, Isabelle knew you weren't the mayor, but she was desperate because there were only 5 villagers and the town was barren.

And she knew that it was Tortimer's grandson who was supposed to be mayor, but he'd written in earlier to say he didn't want to do it; he's also the one who writes you the letter later. So she took a chance when she saw your character come out of the train station, and called you mayor.

Tortimer ended up being happy because he saw the town growing, so he didn't say anything about it.

I thought that was a cute comic & theory. :)

^^^ I think about the comic fashions mentioned too, whenever I hear this question.
Idk tho. It really depends on the way you interpret acnl! Like, everyone's towns have stories I guess?
I don't think there's a solid answer, since the game was never meant to have a canon background or explanation to it! In the same vein, tho, I ask a lotta other questions too- why does your mom write to you, but almost never your dad? Why is the water fenced in? Who ends balloon items?
Idk! A lot of people think it's silly to question a game for kids that's intentionally ambiguous, but I always like the sorta dash of surrealism it brings when you think a bit about the plot

I don't think there's a real canon answer, just our interpretations. We know that whoever was going to be the mayor doesn't mind that you took over, since you get a letter from them shortly after you start.

My personal theory is that it's Rover. He doesn't want to be the mayor so he just dumps the responsibility on the first person he sees on the train.

You get letters from your dad too! My mayor almost always gets letters from her mother, but one of my side characters gets letters from her father all the time. He writes to her almost as much (or even more) than her mother. I guess that it might be random, though the game seems to lean to your mother. I don't know why, either.

I definitely think it's someone in the town. The "new mayor" was coming to the town regardless, right? Which leads me to suspect characters that aren't there from the original start of the game. I think it was Digby.

Tortimer. He sends you a letter basically saying it was him, so...

I do somewhat subscribe to the "Rover" theory. Tho it could be some character we have never or will never see. It is interesting to think on and I like all the ideas.
