Okay, I have a a problem, guys.

What can I do if a fugly, FUGLY, FUGLY shirt has caught on like a veritable plague in my town. (Have I mentioned this shirt is fugly? Oh, I haven't? Well, it is.) It has infected five villagers now.

What I've tried: 1) Telling Isabelle that I didn't like their clothing, she said she'd talk to them, and there they all were... wearing the ugly shirt the next day. 2) Sending them letters with cute shirts attached. 3) Hating them from a distance because of their fugly (truly, I cannot express enough just how fugly) shirts.

Either Isabelle is slacking (I mean, duh, homegirl can't even process more than one PWP a day) or I'm DOOMED.

Help.

Did you only send one of each shirt? Mum has to send hers two of each for them to change, they keep one in their house and wear the other one.

Extremely simple solution to this, I can promise you that. I'm in the process of doing this in my own town with all ten of my villagers to restore their original clothing / whatever I'd like them to wear. All you have to do is order 5 of the same shirt to your mailbox, attach the shirts in 5 seperate letters, and send them all off in one day. The next day, they should be wearing the shirt that you sent them.

Two won't work. They can display one in their house, but they also could put one up in Re-Tail.

I always send 2 letters with the same shirts attached. In the letter I say something like "I think this shirt will look good/pretty/cute on you. Will you try it on for me?"

If you don't mind TTing, since letters get delivered at 5 p.m, send the letters before its 5 p.m. Then save and quit, and load the game at like 5:01 p.m or anytime past 5 p.m. Walk around the town and see if the villager changed his or her shirt. If they did, Yay! If not, quit without saving and load the game again. Only save when they actually changed into the shirt you sent them.

* if you sent the letters after 5 p.m, save and quit then load the game at 4:58 p.m. Save immediately. Then go inside your house for 2-3 mins, and when it's past 5 p.m., do the same thing I said above xD walk around and see if they changed their shirt or not.

I just used this method to change Merengue's ugly shirt she got from Julian... It was desert camo shirt and she thought she looked so pretty in it .__.

Sending multiples of the same shirt might work but it's not guaranteed, since even if they wear one, they might display the others in their houses.

You can empty your inventory or (if you don't want to get random items) fill it with something the villagers won't try to buy from you, like flowers. Put the shirt in your inventory and go talk to the villager whose shirt you want to replace. After talking to them a bit, they'll offer to buy or trade it from you and you can say yes. If they're not doing that after a few times of talking to them, go do something else and then talk to them again, so they won't get sick of you. You can also do something similar to the PWP trick, by putting on your wetsuit and waiting in the water for at least 5 minutes. Make sure that that villager is the first one you see when you go back to your town. They'll ping you and sometimes it's about PWPs or greetings, but sometimes it's because they want to buy the shirt from you.

Sometimes I also wait until shortly before a mail round (there's one at 9 AM and another at 5 PM) and mail out a letter with the shirt attached, then I'll save the game. I do something else and wait until it's at least one minute past that hour and go find that villager. If they're wearing the shirt, I save the game, and if not, I'll quit without saving and try again. I think this is more effective when they are indoors. It's similar to what Arabelle suggested but I only send one shirt instead of multiples.

I've read that if you send them letters, writing words like "friend" and wrapping it makes them like it better (and more likely to wear it) but I can't confirm that.

Also, if it's a custom shirt, it helps to replace the designs in your Able Sisters with umbrellas or nicer designs. Villagers are more likely to wear designs that you've made, so you can put up some that would work for all villagers and they'll wear them.

I've noticed that reporting villagers to Isabelle doesn't work for game shirts, they'll keep wearing them. I think it works mostly if they're wearing custom designs, since it's meant to let you delete offensive stuff if you've gotten those villagers from other players. By the way, reporting them won't change their shirts to default but to a plain shirt.

It's always worked for Mum but her re-tail is full so that's possibly why?

My Re-Tail is full of overpriced fruit, too, but they can still display the shirts in their houses.

If it's one of the customs from the shops you can replace it and they might change to the one you put up instead. I had like four villagers wearing the yellow/green bird starter custom shirt and when I changed them they changed eventually. If you do send them things I think they're more likely to wear them if you write "friend" and do a full page of text. At least that's what I heard, same goes for putting furniture up in their homes.

You made me curious about how fugly these shirts are exactly, you should post a picture so that we can develop a cure for this plague.

With us they display one and wear the other. They've never displayed both, but they've also never worn ones they've bought from us!

Just shows how much it can differ, it's never simple eh? Lol.

Sometimes villagers will swap clothing with each other, which may work to your advantage; I wanted my villagers to stop wearing the orange shirt design available from the start of the game, but thanks to Merengue, many of my villagers are now wearing chef's outfits.

lol that would be the cutest thing!!

some of the outfits aren't that bad, but its who wears them that is the bad decision... when I had Zucker is flan shirt (which looked great on him) spread to teal Sprinkle and pink/purple Renee... they looked hideous in them.... Sprinkle and Zucker are gone now and Renee JUST changed her shirt yesterday....

8/10 villagers were wearing swell shirts for a while too and I was like ya'll are stupid

This method works for me! I've only had one villager who didn't wear the shirt I sent, but I think I might have only sent 2-3 instead of 5!

I just cracked up.

I was gonna say that this happened with my villagers and that it was the sundae tank... and then there was that post about the sundae tank. perfect.
a less ugly shirt has spread now, but it only looks good on Clay. but he's like, spreading it. Freya and Walt have it... it's only a matter of time. maybe

Oh! I physically cringed when I saw that shirt.
That would be a BAD shirt plague. The worst I had was the jester shirt.
