A experiment about Marshall, and other popular villagers.

Before the Marshal hype was even there, I actually looked through a list of all possible smug villagers, and claimed that Marshal was extremely cute. Nowadays, I have him in my town, a cute little marshmallow. They only problem I have nowadays with him is that he gives me a lot of rage-inducing items.

That and I agree with others, it's the cuteness factor.

I have several T5 characters in my new town. As shallow as this may sound, I choose characters based on their appearances. However, doing so, for me, has nothing to do with what tier they're in. In my old town, I have Zucker. I wanted him because I wanted to get as many villagers I could possible with German names considering I'm basing my town around a German style. Or at least trying. In my new town, if I ever got Coco or Stiches, it would be because I like the unique look they have rather than because they're popular. I still don't see the appeal in a character like Marshal, though. Food villagers, or villagers like Ankha, I can see why they might be popular. They have a unique look.

Even then, though, you've got characters like Sterling and Knox, both who have a knightly appearance that is very unique, but they're in T5. I also like Doc. He looks a nerd and I actually think he looks really cool. He's also T5. But I don't care.

I love Julian, Bam, Fang (T1s) and Zell but I don't like Marshal. People like what they like, maaaan.

ok yeah but will anyone ever admit to wanting something bc it was popular

i genuinely want to see that person raise their hand pls

Uh...there may genuinely NOT be any and would you believe that if it were true? But many people do seem to hate villagers BECAUSE they are popular. But that seems to be all right. I'm not arguing your possibility, but I highly doubt people just go for villagers because of popularity. After all, they have to live with them, and I think that's far more unlikely than living with them just for the sake of their popularity according to this forum.

There may be people who like those three because they're popular and like to show off.

Most people probably like them just because of their design and because it fits with the town they want to have. All three of them have a certain "cute" type of design, and Julian and Stitches look pretty unique for their categories, so maybe that's why some people want all of them.

There's probably lots of people who just want one of them and don't like the other two, or something like that, for that reason. Everyone has designs they like and designs they don't. At the end of the day, liking popular villagers or unpopular ones doesn't make anyone better or worse, just as preferring one furniture theme over another just indicates your personal preferences and what you want your game to be like.

Personally, out of all those three, I like Julian best because of his house decoration. Stitches has a cute design and I like him for that. Marshal doesn't stick out to me in any particular way, so I don't have any strong feelings about him either way. I don't hate them, but there are villagers I like better. If they come into my town I'll decide whether I want them around based on how much I enjoy interacting with them but I'm not actively going to look for them. They're just not the ones I like most, and that doesn't make me any better or worse than anyone else. It just means I like the design of other villagers better.

ehh.. i have maple, zucker, fauna, mint, tia, nan, henry, and stitches (aka my signature is outdated)
i don't want marshal or merengue, as cute as they may be- almost every town i go to has one of them so i get villagers i think are cute. i dont really want zucker, but he came to my campsite so i thought id keep him to trade for a dreamie.

there's a line between having dreamies and just getting rich villagers to look rich. my friend got marshal as one of her first five original villagers in her first town and she loved him, without knowing his worth because we had no idea a forums for acnl even existed. she reset her town, and now shes trying to get marshal back.

i really wish peopled would just get villagers they really think are adorable instead of richies because they are rich. not what the game is about. if marshal wasn't a tier 1, people wouldn't want him as much as they do. i fell in love with goldie and in mind i thought she'd be a tier 2 or above before i actually looked at the list. but then again, it is a game and if their weren't rares it wouldn't be very fun. it's quite easy to "beat" acnl anyways.

actually, a couple people already admitted to it :P so there ya go

I have Fauna and Marshal(on a side town) Fauna was one of my starters on one of my side towns. I wasn't apart of the forums back then. I just thought she was cute. Marshal moved in a few days after starting that town. Hes cute but I wouldn't have gone out of my way to get him. I want Stitches because I had him in WW and was attached not because of popularity. I dislike Julian the unicorn so much. I really don't have an opinion on the rest of Tier 1. A lot of times I choose my villagers for nostalgia reasons. Thats why I have Bob and Octavian, I had them in WW.

I really feel bad for the people who like a lot of the popular villagers. They are always getting told to EXPLAIN why they like them. Why do people care so much about what villagers people keep or not.

I can admit I would like to have Meringue because of her popularity factor. The rest in my town though are pure like on my part.

Tbh if Marshal moved to my town I'd only be happy because I can make a ton of bells selling him. He isn't that great in my eyes.
My favourite is Diana because she is just so beautiful and a sweetie. I like cute looking villagers and don't really care about their tiers. Like, I got Margie the other day and I adore her cause she's so cute but she is a bottom tier. Idk.

Besides I am kinda put off by some top tier villagers cause everyone seems to have them and it forms this sort of generic set of villagers to have and that's kinda dumb to me.

Kind of confused by the OP??

People find out about the popular villagers because they see them in towns/signatures/etc. A lot of people see Marshal, and think he's cute, so they get him. Because of this, he's in even more towns/signatures, which leads to more and more people noticing and deciding to get him. Other villagers, like Curly are cute, but unpopular. If everyone put Curly in their signature/town, people would see him and start to like him.

People say they want Marshal "because I saw him and he was cute" and not because he's popular. You can say that this is 100% true, but it's not. The Bob thread convinced many people to want Bob (and put him in a higher tier), but Bob was already quite popular. My Curly thread had three pages of replies, but convinced a total of zero people to want Curly. Curly is a tier five villager, and I've yet to see anyone else with him as a dreamie.

(But people don't realize they're doing this, so they're probably all going to kill me now)

I haven't read the thread, but I'm 95% sure that people will deny wanting villagers "because they're popular.'

edit: yes, I do want Coco, Francine and Chrissy for this reason.
edit2: this applies to unpopular villagers as well, like Jambette. She is pretty much universally hated, because people talk about hating her so much. This might be justified though, because she's ugly. Other villagers, like Stinky and Truffles aren't so bad, but people hate them because hating them is popular.
