So, this came to me in the middle of the night, and I chuckled to myself at it. What if whenever you tried to convince a villager to stay instead of moving out, they said something along the lines of "Sorry, I feel as if this move is what's best for me" and decided to move out anyway? I'm sure it would piss a lot of people (including myself) off, but I just think it would be an interesting concept for AC Switch. It would help the villagers feel more 3D. Opinions?

sometimes villagers just up and leave without telling you

not as in "you missed them telling you" not telling you, but "they never were going to tell anyone" not telling you

They already did something like this in the earlier installments, but you can convince them to stay when they’re ready to move and in boxes.

They removed both of the features in New Leaf. But my idea would be that if when you tell villagers to stay they will and if you tell them to stay when they’re in boxes they will.

"sorry, but I've already put a 250,000 bell deposit down on a new home, which is non-refundable at this point, so..."

I'm sure this was already a thing, only you could just re-do the dialogue over and over again until they stayed. Probably Wild World where that was the case.

Anyways I think that's the best way to do it. I figure you should always be able to keep a villager, unless maybe they had really low friendship - then there would be no reason for them to stay just because you want them to. But if you maybe did a certain task for them or raised their friendship enough in the window before they moved they would reconsider. I think making it a challenge in that situation would be a nice way to make you get closer to the villagers you want to keep lest they should leave without thinking twice about you!

What you’re saying is, when you max a villagers friendship level they’ll stay forever, but if you decrease their friendship they’ll hate you and leave? Time to get those nets on your hated villagers

Haha not exactly. I don't think it's realistic for them to leave just because they hate you, nor do I think it's realistic for them to not wnt to move just because they have their best friend in town. Rather when it comes to them deciding to move on their own, your level of friendship with them will help determine how easy it is to convince them to stay.

Whoa there, I already created a "Ruin Animal Crossing Forever" thread!

In all seriousness, I think this would make it really difficult to have any enjoyment when it comes to villagers. Since whenever you get attached to one, you know they will eventually move out and there is nothing you can do about it. It would be like the 2 "traveller" villagers in Gamecube that you never really care about since they will just leave in a week, except this time it's your entire roster. I'm sure Nintendo wouldn't be sadistic enough to actually do this, but if they ever do, I will probably just keep playing the previous titles once the novelty of a new game wears off.

I work and the talking them out of moving is already time consuming.
I want to enjoy the game rather than feeling like it's a chore, which tends to happen in AC.

^That's why a lot of people have suggested in other threads that we should be able to kind of 'lock' the town if we're going to be away for a while. Even though that would be pretty convenient I do feel like the town should kind of move on and evolve even when you're not there, because that's what the game was originally about. I don't think the series was started as a 'build the perfect town' simulator, but rather as a 'live in a town that's constantly changing' simulator. But then, the series has changed into the former lately (fine by me), so I guess it could go either way.

I think it'd be funny if you had to actually convince them to stay. Like let's say they say "I'm moving out on the 7th of next month!" You have to be super duper nice to them for a month and maybe even get special quests to stop their move. I think if you can't stop it, that's no fun, but it would be funny to have to suck up to them to get them to stay imo.

I would hate it. It's a game, it's supposed to be fun. If you tell a villager "please stay" it means...that you want him/her to stay! Pretty simple, isn't it?
Animal Crossing is supposed to be a nice game, not a troll! A little bit of troll is fun, true. But seeing friends live and never coming back. Duh, it's just heartbreaking!!!!!
But well, it's my opinion. As I'm nice to ALL my villagers and love them all nearly equally, I hate that idea. A lot.

I like this. It'd be like in ACGC when you come back from visiting a town and they're just gone.

"sorry, but I've already put a 250,000 bell deposit down on a new home, which is non-refundable at this point, so..."
Player: "I will give you the 250,000 bells back plus 250,000 more if you stay. PleASE DON'T LEAVE ME,
YOU'RE MY FAVORITE AND SOO CUTE, DON'T LEAVE ME WITH THOSE UGLY VILLAGERS BEHIND!!! ;-;"

...

But yeah, you know what? I wouldn't mind that. If there is one thing I learned while playing New Leaf
for all these years, then that there are over 300+ other villagers and just because that one villager you
really like wants to move away doesn't mean that you don't find another villager you start to like too.
Also, it's not like that you never ever going to see this villager again and if amiibos are a thing again in
the new game then there is a option at least to get that villager back faster.

aaaagh i would hate that! its like that moment when ur least favourite villager tells u they're moving and u respond with an answer supportive of their move and they decide to stay !

Have a reversible option to make the animals permanent residents.

I'm sick of talking them out of moving.
There are other things I'd rather be doing in the game.

Delightfully devilish, Seymour!

Ahhh, yeah. I think it'd be funny, probably, until then out of nowhere a favorite just forces his way out of there. It's definitely a way to spice things up in your town but it just makes everything a lot harder for people with sentimental attachment to their villagers. But I'm sure some people wouldn't mind it haha, it does keep your town from getting stale!
