total a-hole
Today, I heard one of my best friends say that he thought 'Legion' was an alright movie. That *censored.2.0* MUST stop in America. Here's a list of 10 legitimately good movies, for almost every genre that there is. I promise that you won't go wrong in watching one of these. Granted, my taste is thrown in here. Luckily for you, I have great taste. It was super hard for me to pick just 8 movies, so I can assure you these are some of the best of the best. I might make an expanded list soon.
Romance: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Sunshine is one of my favorite movies of all time, straight up. I *censored.3.0*ing hate romance flicks, but this is one huge exception. Jim Carrey plays a convincing role as a challenged guy and Kate Winslet is cast perfectly as his quirky love interest. This is more than a story about love; are you worth remembering?
Thriller/Suspense: Psycho
Watch the man who INVENTED the genre; Alfred Hitchcock at his *censored.3.0*ing best, people. You've all seen the famous shower stabbing scene, now watch the whole thing and appreciate a film classic.
Horror: The Shining
My favorite movie of all time. One of Kubrick's most highly praised films. Jack Nicholson gives a mind-blowing performance as a man losing his grip on reality here. Kubrick does a phenomenal job here at playing games with the audience's head here as well. See this if you haven't. It's what inspired me to be a filmmaker. "Here's Johnny!"
Comedy: Juno
Another more recent film, Juno is one of my favorite films of the decade. Both Michael Cera and Ellen Paige play a very convincing quirky teen couple figuring things out as they both grow up a little too quickly. As an indie film, I can appreciate this one even moreso.
Documentary: Man on Wire
It's so hard for me to pick just one documentary to recommend. I'm such a huge fan of this genre. This one is a bit more current. It's about some French maniac tightrope walker who walked across the MOTHER *censored.3.0*ING TWIN TOWERS. This one got a lot of awards attention, recently as well.
Honorable mention: King of Kong.
Sci-Fi: 2001: A Space Odyssey
This may be a little dry for some of today's teens (with attention spans of flies), but Kubrick's masterful photography and storytelling (without using much dialogue, even) are clearly evident here.
War: Full Metal Jacket
Full Metal Jacket is another Kubrick classic. It's more than being about badass battle scenes, but more about the dehumanization process that takes place during boot camp and during battle.
Drama: There Will Be Blood
One of the more recent films on my list, There Will Be Blood is, in my opinion, the best film made in recent memory. This character study shines with an Oscar-worthy performance by Daniel Day-Lewis, as an oil prospector's monetary status increases, his morality takes a pitfall. Love this film more every time I see it. Brings up questions about faith, family, morality, and religion.
