i reached 5 stars a few days ago. i had the villager, flowers and trees down but the main thing i needed was appealing scenery - so, i added a variety of furniture from the nook mile items to regular nook’s cranny stuff and made sure to spread them out. it also helps to have fences around!

I honestly had a ton of random stuff down and flowers were everywhere. It probably helped too though that my villagers each have their own yard with their own theme so that added most of the furniture lmao. Oddly, trees were the hardest thing for me to get up to par since I cut a ton down to terraform, but I didn't realize I had cut down that many!
I got 5 stars last week. My island is still a work in progress but I saw a Jacob's Ladder. That's how I knew. If it helps, I have:
- 400+ flowers
- 15 Nook Mile furnitures (mostly streetlamps)
- 300+ fences (majority are hedges and iron fences)
- 120+ outdoor furniture
- 24+ trees / 40+ fruit trees / 12 bamboo trees
- 50+ shrubs

I don't have any nook mile furniture and my island is full of weeds, there is literally weeds everywhere, but 5 stars. You can probably cheese it by having a bunch of flowers or little diy stuff everywhere like benches, pots, etc. Put some lanterns everywhere too or if your island is more forest-y like mine, put the wild log bench or firewood everywhere. Also, I probably have more than 200 bushes.

Since I genuinely wanted to figure out how it works myself, I actually thought the map had more to do with it than it does...
I thought you had to place DIYs and furniture in each square on the map. You do not, lol. But I got to the point where I had 3-4 items, mostly DIY, in each map square, as well as bridges and inclines, of course.

I had a lot of aspirations for my island, so filling the furniture requirement was easy for me and i didn't even know about it. But what sucked for me was fighting with Isabelle about trees xD We're at a happy medium now! lmao
You gotta pick all your stuff up..like you should have as little items "dropped" as possible. It took me a bit to figure this out lol. I was trying to store extra tools all packaged up via "drop it's." on a series of cute lil benches, & that's a no-go. Use "place item", not "drop item" for everything. Then, you gotta out some big stuff out on display too..like a lighthouse, fountain, teacup ride..you know like the big stuff (underneath the nook miles redemption is good to refer too as being safe bets). Basically stuff that would bring tourists irl.

Yes idk how! I have a lot.. but I crafted some bamboo stuff I never got the chance too and I’ll put them into my bakery c:
It helps, but isn’t needed. I barely have any fencing on my island, but am still at 5 stars. You can make up for lack of fences with flowers or furniture.
