hi :lemon:
I saw a tiktok yesterday of acnl nostalgic gameplay and in the comments the poster said that the 3ds online play was being discontinued in january of 2023.
i know this is probably a lie, but is there any realm of truth to this? is it likely to be discontinued soon in 2023?
thanks :)

This is probably related to the closure of the 3DS and Wii U eShop in spring of next year. I don't think there's been a set date for multiplayer servers on those platforms being shut down, but Nintendo's (charitably speaking) spotty track record of supporting their online services leaves open the possibility of New Leaf and other games being shut down in the near future as well. Only time will tell, I suppose.

thanks! the video comments specified that apparently the 3ds online servers would be shut down, but i wasn't really sure as nintendo hasn't confirmed or denied it. the eshop closing though will probably affect things tho :(

As far as I know, only the E-shop is closed, to buy, you can still download the games you bought. and it's end of march not january.

Anyway, I guess that after closing the E-shop, they will close the online soon, but nothing is confirmed yet, it may last 1 or 2 more years.

Online services typically will stay active for about three years after the eShop closes if we look at the Wii and DSi. The Wii was still able to access some online features and the DSi could use the eShop. The only system to completely be cut off from all online capabilities was the DS and that was due to the server being completely shut down. The games most affected by that move were the DS Pokémon games with Black and White 2 suffering the biggest hit due to them only being able to use online functionality for about a year and a half, Wild World, and maybe Mario Kart.

i believe i saw the same tiktok you’re talking about but i saw it reposted on instagram. i asked someone if it’s really true that online was shutting down and they said that the tiktok was about the eshop closing rather than online servers. tbh i’d be really sad if the online servers shut down and hopefully someone makes a fan made server like wiimmfi. hopefully it’s true that it’ll last for another 3 years.

You can always homebrew your 3DS. But I don’t think Wi-Fi will turn off it seems that Animal Crossing New Leaf uses worldwide internet connection for Tortimers island. But when you connect with friends online to go to their town or chat through the best friends it just uses your home Wi-Fi.

The worldwide web and your home Wi-Fi are actually the same thing in this context. Both connecting to friends online and visiting Tortimer's Island online both uses your home WiFi. Visiting a local friend however uses a proprietary wireless connection built into the 3DS that directly communicates with another 3DS.
