I'm gonna do my best to try to explain this but I was ya know.. strolling around my town today when something popped up on my screen. It was a chat bubble (like when you talk to any npc in the game) but the chat bubble had no name. It just had 3 question marks like this "???" as the name. And it was telling me to come to him but I didn't know where "here" was. And I moved around a few times and it would pop up again and be like "nope not quite, you're almost there" things like that. After that happened like 3 times it didn't happen again and I just went upon my day in the game. Is this like a thing?

he'll be in empty areas so his magic lamp can drop. if theres areas of your town with no space on the floor, he wont be there.

just wanted to add, i went through my entire town (everything's pretty developed) and i couldn't find him. he ended up being on the beach (southern part of town), but when his ??? bubble first popped up, i was in the northern half of town. it was very annoying lmao
That happened to me when I played my second character! When I walked the wrong way he just stopped giving me directions, even when I went back to the same spot where he started talking to me. He popped up the next day though.
That's annoying that he can start talking to you so far away from the spot he's in, but I guess that's the price of having a well-developed town with tons of QR codes and whatnot. I didn't have too much trouble finding him, he was right next to my police station.
wow, so he could only be in 3 areas for me then. how convenient
(Re-Tail, Plaza, Town Hall. only areas with open drop spots in my entire town)
