“Whoever is with me, come to the battlefield tomorrow morning.
Whoever is not, just stay wherever you are and watch me win it!”

- Oda Nobunaga, June 11th 1560.

During the latter half of the sixteenth century, three military leaders fought bitterly to harness control over Japan. One of those warlords, Oda Nobunaga, was both fierce and well-loved. By 1582, he had two-thirds of Japan under his control and was coming even closer to achieving his aim of uniting the country under one rulership.

On June 21st 1582, one of Oda Nobunaga’s long-term retainers, Akechi Mitsuhide, betrayed him. During Oda Nobunaga’s attempted siege on the country’s capital city of Kyoto, Akechi Mitsuhide turned on the great warlord and set fire to the Honnō-ji Temple, where Oda Nobunaga was lodging. Oda Nobunaga commit suicide via seppuku before he could be burned alive. His loyal pageboy, Mori Ranmaru, imitated his actions and died alongside him. In modern history, this event has come to be known as The Honnō-ji Incident.

Welcome to TBT Mafia X: The Honnō-ji Incident.

In this game of mafia the players are divided into three factions: the town (Oda Clan); the mafia (Akechi's Army); and the cult (The Daijō-kan). The members of Akechi's Army are a small minority, whom are all aware of each others roles, who are able to work together privately to kill off the clan. Meanwhile, the Oda Clan need to seek out and kill the betrayers: although they have the advantage of being larger in numbers; they are disadvantaged in that they do not know anyone else's roles besides their own. Finally, The Daijō-kan are the cult team. Each night they can persuade another player to join their team and their objective is to outnumber town.

You will be given at least one hour notice of your role before the game commences. From then on the game will enter the day and night phases. During the day the Oda Clan will work together to try and suss out a member of the Akechi's Army and vote them for the lynch. During the night phase special clan roles, third party roles, and members of Akechi's Army will each send in their night actions.

Be warned - Mafia requires a time commitment. This generally depends on the player, but at minimum 30 minutes a day of solid effort is required. As part of the time commitment, Mafia requires a great deal of reading. Most people are actually quite poor at reading comprehension and playing Mafia is a great way to improve your reading ability, as well as your writing and ability to think and argue logically.

Game Over! The Oda Clan have won the war!

Roles
Please note that because a role is listed here doesn't necessarily mean it will be included; however, all possible roles are mentioned. Also, roles aren't unique.

The Oda Clan

The Oda Clan are on a mission, decided by Oda Nobunaga, to unite all of Japan under one rulership. You have already claimed two-thirds of the country’s landmass and now you’re heading straight for the capital city of Kyoto. You win if you successfully eradicate (1) Akechi’s Army and (2) The Daijō-kan. Possible roles are as follows:

Bushi (Townie)
You are one of Oda Nobunaga’s loyal retainers. When he issues the command you will be right there at his side, ready to throw yourself into battle in order to protect your leader.

Oda Nobunaga (Mayor)
On day 1, all players in the game will have the chance to vote on who receives this role.
You are a strong leader and a militant warlord. Your men trust you and have helped you lay claim to over two-thirds of this vast island nation. As a result of this trust, you have been given nighttime immunity until your pageboy, Mori Ranmaru, passes away. However, you are still susceptible to lynching if the Oda Clan choose to turn on you.

Mori Ranmaru (Bodyguard)
At the end of day 1, a random Bushi will be promoted to this role.
You are a pageboy to Oda Nobunaga and, as long as you are alive, he has night-time immunity from kills by all alignments. However, there is a catch: if Oda Nobunaga is lynched, then you will die alongside him. If Oda Nobunaga is shot by a Rōnin then you will not die.

Bugy?nin (Detective)
You are in charge of documenting Oda Nobunaga’s ascent to becoming one of the most powerful warlords of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. As a result of your work, you have access to a great wealth of information about each of Nobunaga’s retainers. Each night you can PM the host with the name of a player you wish to discover the role of.

Rōnin (Assassin)
You are masterless and free from the usual rules regarding actions. Once per game you can PM the host with the name of a player you wish to kill during the daytime. Your hit will not be refunded if it overlaps with the lynch target, so stay alert. Even if you yourself are lynched your hit will still go through - veterans, medics, roleblockers, and the elected roles cannot interfere with your hit which means you are guaranteed a 100% success rate.

Samurai (X-Shot Vigilante)
Once per game you can PM the host with the name of a player you wish to kill. If your hit overlaps with another player’s, or you are role-blocked, then your hit will be refunded. You will not be told why it has been refunded.

Shokunin (Medic)
There is no war without bloodshed. You loyally accompany the Oda Clan into battle in order to tend to those who need treatment. Once per night you can PM the host with the name of a player you wish to protect. If you protect a Fudai, then your protection will be used before their hit. You cannot target the same person two nights a row but you are free to use this action on yourself.

Fudai (Veteran)
You are long-standing retainer in the Oda Clan. You’ve seen your fair share of battles and have survived them all. The gruesome memories serve as a reminder of how dangerous the night can be. Your caution has rewarded you with two night lives. If you are protected by a Shokunin night, then that person’s protection will be used before one of your lives.

Sohei (Priest)
Oda Nobunaga destroyed your monastery, Enryakuji, in 1571, marking the end of the warrior monks. You joined with him out of a need to belong, even though you refuse to go into battle. If anyone visits you during the night you will be told what action they performed on you the following morning.

Tsuda Nobusumi (Self-Aware Miller)
Oda Nobunaga’s nephew, Tsuda Nobusumi, was killed by his cousin shortly after the Honnō-ji Incident in June 1582. He was suspected of being affiliated with Akechi Mitsuhide. You will return Gennin if inspected by a Bugy?nin.

Akechi's Army

Akechi Mitsuhide fought alongside Oda Nobunaga for many years as a high-ranking general within the Oda Clan. However, when his fellow generals turned heat on him he had to make a decision: to deliver his own head or Oda Nobunaga’s. Self-preservation is number one, and thus Akechi’s Army was born. You win when your team controls at least half the voting power. Each player is able to send in KP and contributes 0.5KP. Possible roles are as follows:

Akechi Mitsuhide (Godfather)
You were once a follower of Oda Nobunaga. Now, you’re leading the army against him. No one knows for certain why you chose to betray Nobunaga, but speculation includes pressure from other retainers as well as possible blackmail. Skilled at remaining undetected, if a Bugy?nin tries to inspect you then you will return as aligned with the Oda Clan. You have until the end of Day 1 to choose what role you wish to return as if inspected; if you do not pick on time then you will return as Bushi.

Joro (Hooker)
Your job is to distract the Oda Clan during the night. Once per night you can PM the host with a player you wish to visit. Everyone else who visits that player will be role-blocked, but if your target has an action then they will still be free to use it. You cannot target the same person two nights a row but you are free to use this action on yourself.

Metsuke (Framer)
You were an undercover cop sent by the Emperor to investigate Sakamoto Castle - but you were caught out by the castle guard. Now you work under Akechi Mitsuhide. Once per night you can PM the host with a player you wish to frame; if investigated they will return as a Gennin.

Eta (Mafia Doctor)
You grew up as the son of an undertaker, with dreams of taking over the family business. But a body is a body and instead of preparing the corpses of fallen samurai for burial you now treat the living. Once per night you can PM the host with the name of a player you wish to protect. If you protect a Fudai, then your protection will be used before their hit. You cannot target the same person two nights a row but you are free to use this action on yourself.

Joshu (Mafia Roleblocker)
You are the castellan of Sakamoto Castle: the meeting point of Akechi’s Army. You will do anything to prevent anyone from uncovering the secrets of the castle and it’s inhabitants. Once per night you can PM the host with the name of a player you wish to stop from acting. You cannot target the same person two nights a row.

Gennin (Mafia Goon)
You used to tend the samurai’s horses. Akechi Mitsuhide had no problem whatsoever enticing you to join his side with the promise of power and money. You have no special abilities.

The Daijō-kan

The Daijō-kan are the political minds of Emperor Ōgimachi and his Heads of State. They are busy preparing for the inevitable clash between the Oda Clan and Akechi's Army in Kyoto. You start with two players and you win when your team controls at least half the voting power.

Emperor Ōgimachi (Cult Leader)
You’ve received word of Oda Nobunaga’s advance toward Kyoto and you’re terrified. As a man of 65, you’re much too old to fight this battle alone. Each night you can convince another player to join your team. If you attempt to recruit a member of Akechi’s Army it will fail.

Dairyo (Cultist)
You have been persuaded to leave Oda Nobunaga’s side and instead your goal is to now uphold The Daijō-kan or else the country will dissolve into anarchy. Even if you’re orphaned by Emperor Ōgimachi and can no longer recruit new members your goal remains unchanged.

Rules

Cheating:
Cheating includes (but is not limited to):
1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information.
2. Ruining the game by doing something like handing out your mafia's member list to the town.
3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role.
4. Posting screenshots of your inbox.
5. Posting or sharing any PM you receive from a host.
6. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip.
7. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts.
8. Offering favours/items/bells outside of the game for a ingame information.
9. Sharing accounts with other players.
10. Posting a false role PM phrased as if you received it from the host. You can still fake roleclaim, but you cannot make it look like you are posting a PM you received from the host.
!!! ANYONE CAUGHT SHARING SCREENSHOTS FROM OBSERVER, PM, SCUM CHAT, ANYTHING WILL BE BANNED!!!
Cheating is not tolerated here as it ruins the game for everyone. The mods and admins here CAN take action.

Wisdom of the Crowds
Wisdom of the Crowds is in effect. PM with the name of a player you do NOT want to play with. If I get enough PMs about a person, I will exclude them from the game. PMs will be treated with confidence.

Replacements
This game uses replacements. Replacements will be made in the game until the end of Night 2. If a player is modkilled during the designated time, then they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list.

Time Cycle:
This game will follow a 48 hour day and 24 hour night cycle. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. The deadline will normally be 11PM GMT. Night will always run for the full duration, even if all actions are sent in early. There will be a 30 minute resolution period before the end of night, where no further actions may be sent in. Relevant PMs will be sent out during this time.

Posting
Mod Font:
This is the mod colour. It is reserved for the host. Please do not use it.

Question Font:
This is the question colour. Use it to ask the host questions about the rules in public. You can also PM me.

Activity:
You must post in this thread at least once per full day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to do so, you will be modkilled.

Spam:
Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. This also means you should condense your posts when possible. 15 one-liners in 30 minutes is unacceptable.

Editing:
Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be modkilled. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything. The board software automatically merges the posts anyway.

Observers' Chat:
While spectators will be fuelling speculation, and dead players will be keen to give valuable "insight" into the game, please refrain from revealing game-changing information (eg. the identities of your fellow Mafia). Speculate, theorise and express bewilderment at dumb plays all you want, but remember that the chat is not leakproof and game-ruining information CAN get out.

Inappropriate posts:
Mafia games can get heated and emotional. Please keep it civil and remember that what happens in Mafia stays in Mafia. Don't let things spill over to the rest of the forum, it's just a game. If you are unhappy with a player's posts, PM me first. Only if you are dissatisfied with the outcome should you involve the TBT staff.

Play to win.
That said, you should try your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. Clearly not playing towards your win objective will be grounds for a modkill and ban. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.

This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM your host if you need to leave the game.

You have been warned.

General Mafia Voting Rules

  1. This game will use Majority Lynch. For those of you familiar with IRC Mafia, it is the same system. When a player attains over 50% of the vote, they will be immediately killed and Day will end. (For example, with 14 players alive, a player requires 8 votes to be lynched) If I am not online and available to post when this occurs, the game will be paused until I can post. No vote changes or actions will be accepted during this period.
  2. If the deadline is reached without a majority, nobody will be lynched. This is considered a Deadline No Lynch. Voting is required on a regular basis or you may risk mod kill, please see the Activity section under the General Mafia Rules. You may choose not to lynch, but you must make this clear (##VOTE: No Lynch).
  3. Voting is done in a separate thread, located here. (TBA) You may announce and discuss your votes in this main thread, but only votes in the Voting thread will be counted. Do not PM me your vote.
  4. Please vote in the following format: ##VOTE: Username. Votes not done in the correct fashion may not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance.
  5. If you want to change your vote, first type ##UNVOTE followed by your new vote ##VOTE: Username. You can change your vote at any time and as much as you like (within reason) up until a majority is reached.
  6. No conditional voting.
  7. You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game.
  8. Voting is required on a regular basis or you may risk mod kill.

If you would like access to the Observers Chat, please PM me or state it during sign up phase. Before you do though, I ask that you possibly consider joining the replacements list instead. If you join the Observer Chat, you obviously cannot become a replacement later in the game if needed. You CANNOT share the chat with living players, or any information from it.

If you have not read all the rules, go back and do so. I will not compensate for ignorance!

Just wanted to clarify something for new people, yes, you keep your role if you become mayor.
