New Leaf is still by far my favorite AC game, but I always felt like there?s something about the GameCube Animal Crossing?s atmosphere that makes it my second favorite (while I fully admit it has its problems).

Anyone else feel the same way?

Yes; it was certainly made with a different air to it. A fair bit of time has passed and things have changed since it was made. New Leaf is a great game, but it misses some of the quirky and adventurous nature of the GameCube addition.

I definitely agree with this. While it's still an Animal Crossing game, it feels different enough that I can play it at the same time as New Leaf. I honestly find it difficult to specify what actually makes it feel so different. I think the soundtrack is a big part, though certainly not the only part.

Yes it's much different game! The villager personalities are night and day to New Leaf. I feel like the graphics of the game contribute to the different atmosphere as well, along with the music as Silver said. It's very lovably quirky.

Gamecube AC definitely encouraged in-game fitness a lot more lol and yes the soundtrack is A++++

It's been forever since I've played AC for the GameCube, but I remember it did feel very different from ACNL. Sometimes I miss it and think about playing it on an emulator, but sadly I just don't have time. I seem to recall that it was a lot more relaxing and had more personality. Even though, there's more to do in ACNL, all of that extra stuff can actually cause more stress if you let it.

100%.
From the different activities, acres, villager lines, and how it felt overall.

I loved the Gamecube version as it was my first one I've played, and it really became a major impact on which games I like to this day.

My little brother and I used to love figuring out the secret codes to order from the catalog. It was the first Animal Crossing I played and I have a lot of great memories from it.

oh yeah for sure. i never played much of acgc but i kinda hope they bring back some of it's personality in the next game!

I've been playing AC/GC and maybe it's me, but I feel more alone in this game than any of the other games. Of course, the others had online play, but AC/GC has an atmosphere of solitude to me.

It's better if you share a town with other people (friends, siblings, etc.). It's a different kind of multiplayer experience. Sharing discoveries with other players was a big part of the fun. Things like saying "a blue cat just moved in!" or "I left a surprise for you by the post office" or "I just caught that rare dragonfly!" It's part of the game that has been lost on portable systems, since friends and siblings typically have their own portable systems (and own towns) and don't share the experiences in the same way.

Yeah, I grew up as an only child. During the summer my cousins would be over almost every day and sometimes spent the night, but they never really did play the game. I always wanted to share a town with someone.

A server based animal crossing game would be great.

The top-down view probably contributes to the difference in atmosphere. The fact that you never see the open sky makes everything feel more like a secluded little valley in the woods, or a "hick town" as some call it. imo at least

oh yes 100% it remains my favorite because of it's personality and charm. I miss when the villager were just huge jerks lol.

i remember deciding to play the game a week before new horizons came out.
first villager i met made fun of my name.
had a good time tho.

It does have a different atmosphere. It feels very 2001 and the dark green valley vibe is unique. It's something that can't be replicated again because it's just lost in time. And they'll never make villagers mean towards players again because times are different.

Oh there's no doubt that it has a different atmosphere. I think it just has a certain charm to it that the other AC games don't have. I've played every main series game, as well as Happy Home Designer, and I think that AC:GCN is still my favorite game in the series. It might mostly be because of nostalgia, but there's definitely something intriguing and fun about it that always keeps me coming back.

I agree, my brother and I used to play together in the same town and we would play jokes on each other and stuff. My brother even had his own shop that I would often buy stuff from. It was a fun time.
