Welcome to my tenth amiibo Review! As per usual, I'll highlight the context behind the character, then I'll review its amiibo based on 3 factors: its presentation, its usefulness and its accessibility as of now. Everyone's favorite Green Lean Machine, younger brother of Mario. Well, he's Luigi of course, but you already knew that!

Go Luigi!

A little bit of history...

Luigi is the more talented but more fraidy sibling of Mario. He originally appeared in the arcade game called Mario Bros. In 1983. The character was Shigeru Miyamoto's answer to another arcade game Joust's stork-riding gameplay player, which would compete or cooperate with Mario. The green plumber's name is based on a popular pizzeria near Nintendo of America's headquarters, named Mario & Luigi's. It should be also noted that it's similar to the Japanese word 「類似」 (ruiji), which means "similar". That's among the reasons why he shares the same physical and gameplay aspects as his older brother, until Super Mario Bros. 2 is released in Japan (The Lost Levels in overseas), where he is given a slippier traction and higher floating jump to make him distinguish even further. He also appeared in pretty much every Mario game to date since then.

Presentation

Luigi sure is on a serious business.

Luigi's hilarious plunging pose is a somewhat of a mixed bag to some people. It did allow the amiibo to easily receive significantly more detail than his older brother's amiibo and looks more interesting to look at him than your average Luigi toy, since it conveys him as a quirkier character. However, it also forced Nintendo to add the white translucent stand to hold him so he couldn't easily bend down. The problem with it is, it's placed in such an awkward position that the plumber would feels very uncomfortable to press on, while also obstructing a good portion of his legs.

The L on his cap is a bit too big, but it could be explained that he was leaning downward so fast the hat have gotten a bit wider vertically, and the seam is somewhat jarring on the left and right side of the same cap.

All of the aforementioned detail issues aside, Luigi stills look pretty rad, if not better than the Smash Mario amiibo.

Usefulness

Being among the most popular characters of the Super Mario fame, it's quite easy to guess that he'll work for many compatible games out now and in the future, almost like his older brother. I have nothing else to say in that regard aside the fact he's still more valuable in functionality than a lot of the other amiibo and bringing you the list of compatible games.

List of compatible games that Read-Write this amiibo's memory:

- Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U : Use him as a CPU-controlled Smash Fighter and level him up to 50.
- Mario Party 10: Use him in amiibo Party to play, unlocks his own board and customize the amiibo's item and virtual base.

List of compatible games that reads the amiibo:

- Mario Kart 8 : Unlocks his Mii Costume.
- Hyrule Warriors & Hyrule Warriors Legend : Use him to unlock a weapon from level 3 or below, materials for crafting or even up to 50,000 rupees.
- One Piece : Super Grand Battle X : Unlocks a Luigi outfit that contains special ability for Monkey D. Luffy.
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker : Use him to gain a 1-UP mushroom once per day.
- Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble+ : Unlocks the F-35 "Luigi" aircraft.

Accessibility

For a very long while, Smash Luigi amiibo has been extremely easy to get, and he still is. It shouldn't take too long to find him, regardless on which corner of Earth you live in. If you're too impatient to snag him and/or dislike that one, there's always the more common Super Mario variation of Luigi. Either way, you won't have to spend more than the MSRP, or perhaps even less if you happen to stumble on a sale.

Final verdict

Any Luigi amiibo is a perfect entry point for testing the waters, and also a great amiibo to own too. His details and pose are quite certainly worth your curiosity if you don't mind the stand. For being priced at MSRP and being available almost everywhere you go, you shouldn't have an excuse not to own him, especially considering he's compatible with a lot of games.

Recommendation: GET IT!
