I totally stumbled on this by accident. I was already trying to make curved paths myself and when I put them down to try them out I realised, when you put them on the pathways you buy with Nook Miles, these curve too.
There is a trick though. They only curve with the path when your custom design's sides are transparent. So the upper side of your path only curves if your custom design has some transparency at the top. I made some screenshots of what I mean because I suck at explaining.
