Would you kill an innocent person if you..

this is a loaded question, and honestly it would depend on the situation entirely.

in cases in the military where one soldier is caught and is in danger, i can see where people rationalize the situation by saying, "if we go to retrieve them, we could loose way more than just one solider." and in some cases i can find that completely rational. why loose 50+ men when you could only lose one? but at the same time, who would be willing to truly turn your back on your own brothers..? it's honestly a terrifying question to think about.

given certain circumstances though, i believe that if it came down to it, if i 100% knew that letting one life be lost would save thousands of others, i could justify it. i'd have to live with it the rest of my life, but i could justify it.

Oooooh. Tough ethical question. I guess I'd kill the one person because I'd feel like I'm responsible for the other 12 people dying if I stood by and did nothing. If it were 2 vs. 1, I might think differently though.

If I didn't know though, then I would probably not kill the one person. Like if someone was holding 12 people hostage and told me I had to kill someone to save their lives, then I wouldn't do it cause they could kill all of those people anyway.

Well.. knowing myself, I make a lot of rash decisions. Honestly that one innocent person may be dead because I acted irrationally.

However, if there was time to think then.. I couldn't do it. An 'assumption' that 12 people would be saved is not solid enough for me to justify an innocent person's death.

Sure why not. Sounds fun. And maybe if you hate this person- they probably are just. Ugh.
I mean like- were not 100% if they are innocent. Sooo there is still that 0.01% that they are not innocent.

No, because with the 'innocent' and 'might' it really doesn't get appealing.

Killing one person to save many others might seem like the right choice, but I wouldn't want to live with killing someone. Not if my or family/friends' life hasn't been affected.

If I'm in the position to save 12 people at the cost of one person, I would without hesitation.

I'm not going to fiddle around with the "but what if you don't know-" silly stuff because that's not the question.

In my opinion, if you're faced with that situation and don't save the 12 people, you might as well be killing them. If I'm going to be forced to kill people, I'd like to keep that number to something I can count on one hand.

I think this is a tricky question and I'd say it'd depend on the circumstances, but at the end of the day I honestly don't believe I could ever bring myself to kill an innocent person.

Even if I was able to take some time to think about what I'd wanna do, I'd still probably choose not to kill the one person because in this scenario I'm assuming that the dozen people were going to die anyway and I'd have the chance to change the outcome, and I wouldn't wanna be the one to determine who has more of the right to live. Not only would I feel responsible for directly killing an innocent person, but I'd feel like I was changing fate in a way and that could have unwanted consequences as well.

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it more I suppose I'd be making a conscious decision no matter what I chose to do and the dozen people are likely innocent as well and I'd probably feel just as sad and responsible for their deaths so I don't know... I still don't think I'd be able to kill an innocent person myself but it'd be a lot harder than I originally thought to let the other dozen die.

I wouldn't. . It's the train tracks question of every ethics class. You can choose to either allow the death of 12 people, or you could actively kill one person. Everyone's answer is different based on their morals and beliefs. But I wouldn't.

Yea, sure. "Needs of the many" and all that.

That's assuming they're just random people I don't know. I don't know their life story, so save the most people. In this situation at least one person is gonna die anyway, so keep the numbers low.

If the 1 person is like a friend or family member (basically somebody I like), whoever is making me make this decision should probably bring 12 coffins for the randomers. I'm selfish but whatever.

honestly, no. i would of those people are my family members, but if they're complete strangers, then i hoenstly don't care - i dont want to get involved with other peoples sht

Unless the 12 people were people close to me, no.

Basically this.

it's a hard question because i would still be responsible for the deaths of the dozen other people since i didn't do anything . not only that but they all have families so it impacts even more . either way i feel like a murderer , but i'd like to save the twelve because i'm assuming that they're innocent as well , and i'm also assuming that it's like a button or switch because i don't think i could do it myself . i would probably end up asking that person if they were willing to save the twelve other people first to see their stance .
