It’s time for another word of the day. Yesterday’s word was sophomoric. Today’s word is:

Debacle

Definition:

Pronunciation:

- dā’bäk(ə)l
- də’bäk(ə)l

Meaning:

a sudden and complete failure deserving shame

Synonyms:

- Disaster
- Collapse
- Catastrophe

Antonyms:

- Success

Etymology:

It came from a 19th century French word débâcle, which referred to “breaking ice in a river”.

Examples of Debacles:

  • A TV show that first took air in one year tanks three months later
  • A movie becomes a box office bomb that ruins the studio’s reputation forever
  • A roller coaster train jumps off a track, breaks into bits (as seen in RCT/RCT2)
Counter-Examples:

  • A new law passes, which results in sharp GDP growth and job creation
  • A new item is added to the menu, which results in an increase in the restaurant’s publicity
  • A video game sells over 10 million copies and wins Game of the Year.

I feel like debacle is quite a common word to use over here. I like it as a word :)
