Will tanning no longer be a thing?

I can see no point to tanning anymore.
If you chose to be pale, and tanned when walking around, then your skin choice vanishes.

I think tanning is obsolete now.

probably not since all characters aren’t default white anymore

Non-white people tan too. Unless they’re naturally very dark skinned. I think it could still be a feature. I don’t know though.

I hope it?s not removed. My character will be white-ish, but I would love to be able to get a tan when I don?t walk under an Umbrella or wear a hat and such.

I agree, I think it was a (very strange) way to add skin-tones in new leaf, but in happy home designer and pocket camp they simply let us choose, which... is better, I think. Now they just need to let us design our face from the beginning, instead of all the tricky quizzes!

i think that feature is being implemented in new horizons - we get to choose how we look from the beginning, not just what our skintone is c:

I don't think they'll remove tanning, I think it'll still have some effect on your character's skin tone, but not to a huge degree.

If tanning is still in the game, we would have to edit our character every day in summer that we are outside, to get our chosen skin tone back.

Leaving tanning in defeats the purpose of being able to choose our skin tone, IMO.

It was strange. My friend had to go to the island for hours to tan all 4 of her characters to the darkest skin tone and then had to consistently get them all back to the island to keep them from fading. That sounds exhausting.

Leaving tanning in makes the game feel more natural. I mean, not all of us want to be like Michael Jackson.

I definitely understand why poc are glad you can be non-white now without needing to tan. But I have to say, there was something kind of...nice about it? The way my friends had such elaborate plans to achieve their skin shade, it felt like dark skin was being celebrated as something to be proud of and a desirable trait. And it's quite the change from things I've heard around me about fear of tanning and becoming "darker", skin bleaching creams, and trying to lighten complexions.

I hope that doesn't come off offensive or insensitive. It was just refreshing to see people trying to get darker skin rather than lighter, and happy about having it. It felt very positive.

i think tanning should be removed, honestly. as someone who cant tan at all, i found it kinda annoying and misrepresentative of how i actually look. i would always wear a parasol in summer and still tan and get so frustrated. i never enjoyed the feature. i felt like i was lying abt how i look when i would tan...

as for dark skin positivity, the best thing for positivity of darker skin tones is simply giving the option of naturally dark tones in game. when only tans are acknowledged, brown skin is seen as temporary, not a constant reality and simple way of being for many people. people take the same aesthetic attitude about it as they would about haircolor or makeup, which leads to some racist attitudes, feeling entitled to complain about skincolor OR treat it as an accessory. i know in a few japanese dressup games i play (lovenikki is a good example) light skin is the default and darker skin colors, though equippable, add traits to an outfit, and are usually labeled "sexy" or "lively" which is stereotyping and racist. further, other aspects of race frequently present are not brought into consideration (which they've now done with afro/dread hairstyles in animal crossing NH! :3). it's important to normalize brown skin as a potential "default" as well. there's no one default skin color. also making POC work harder than others to look how they naturally look is problematic and not positive, regarding what the person above said, THOUGH i do understand the notion behind what you're saying.

if you want a summer tan, just change your skin color to slightly tan in the summer (i assume full customization is always available to get over the hurdle of a permanent skintone in a very customizable game). thats easier for everyone

a tedious process that adds hour of gameplay to do something that should only have to take a few clicks is not celebration. tanning was a nuisance and i'm glad we're no longer forced to do that in new horizons.

I don't know how to take that.

I mean, I remember Michael Jackson when he was dark skinned. Then he went white.. so which did you mean?

And if you don't want to look like the white MJ, then choose a dark skin tone. And vice versa.

That's kinda the point of being able to choose.

For me, tanning should be kept to add more depth to the game as you can’t prevent tanning in real life (even with sunblock) and it gave an incentive to wear a hat during the summer which I quite enjoyed :D

I think tanning should be kept. I know we will most likely get to pick our skin tone but it adds more realism. Even if it just tans you a couple shades within the color that you originally picked. For example, if you pick a very pale skin tone you wouldn't turn very dark. Just a couple darker shades within that pale pallet.

CF/Let?s go to the city was the first game to implement it, not new leaf, figure I?d let you know :D

I want tanning to be kept in. Tanning and different possibilities for base skin color are not mutually exclusive, as in real life
