My tenth villager just moved out and I'm worried, is the plot gonna be taken by someone random by tomorrow or do I have time to island hop? I remember in new leaf if you had less than 9 villagers people would randomly move in but at 9, the 10th could only be invited by you?

Will a 10th villager move in automatically?

I don't think anyone should move into your 10th plot except if you invite them. Be careful though, there's quite a lot of glitching recently, and I had my 10th plot taken by a void villager in 24h. (Still had a full day with the plot open)
He moved in nicely and didn't cause any trouble though, so it's fine, but if you do trade a lot and travel and have people travel to your island, be cautious as your 10th plot might end up sold to a voided villager.

Usually, you have a day or two before it will be sold. Someone moved out from my island as well last week. Velma was in boxes on Thursday and then on Friday, it's an open plot. I thought there will be a random move in by Saturday because I don't have time to island hopped that Friday but I was surprised to find that it's still an open plot. I'm not sure it will happen in your case though.

Yes, your 10th plot will automatically fill with time. Mine took 2 days to get claimed but it did happen.
