For those of you that own a Wii U - Basic or Deluxe - what size external storage did you get?

..Or didn't you buy one at all? Why?

When I pick up my Wii U later this month, I want to have an idea of what I should set aside for extra storage. I really prefer to go digital when I can, at least with games I can't see myself ever returning or otherwise getting rid of. I used to prefer having the pretty physical copies on my shelf, but after using Steam I just find digital so much more convenient.

It is primarily things on the Virtual Console that I want, and while I know VC games aren't exactly big, lol, quite a few Wii U titles are, and I just can't see how 3 gigs for the Basic or 25 gigs with the Deluxe is enough space to hold.. well, any of those.

I was more or less planning on going 500GB-1TB -- primarily because I am a hoarder and I like to download all the things immediately and never delete them, ever -- but I want some input from people who already own it. Thank you! :)

I havent bought storage but I plan on it.

Games such as One Piece Unlimited World Red take up like 15.2GB

Yeah, lol. I couldn't find a complete list anywhere, but I did see a couple games mentioned in the 20GB range.

Most of them were things I don't play or wouldn't want for a console, anyway (Assassin's Creed, Batman, Lego City, NBA, etc) but even Smash Bros. is almost 16 GB. That's almost the whole storage for the Deluxe. D:

I would say go for the TB verison since you said you would download a lot. None VC cames on Nintendo are large.. Though I am also going to add that you would save money buying the physical copies at amazon or gamestop... so yeah

Somehow I missed most of your post, and what I was basing my response on wasn't very helpful at all lol.

I don't have any storage myself (I prefer physical and haven't had my deluxe for very long), but I'd go with the most affordable option you can that still offers you lots of space.

Thank you. c:

Honestly, I'm hesitant to buy games through Amazon since I'm not always 100% positive I'm getting a sealed copy, and with used games I'd like to see a picture first, but ebay/CL are even more sketchy. And Gamestop's website is pretty expensive from what I've seen, at least with the things I'm interested in it seems, haha.

And I live in the middle of nowhere, lol.
My closest retail option is Wal-Mart, 40 miles away, and they have, maybe, 6 games on display in each system's case at any given time. I could order online and have it sent to the store for free pick-up, but that's still gonna cost me a half a tank of gas. ;p
Digital is usually my best bet, and that's actually one of the largest contributing factors in my initial decision to switch to PC gaming... but I just can't resist Nintendo's charm. c:

Haha, I still enjoyed reading it, fwiw. And thank you, too. c:

I dunno about affordable, then I start dragging it out into "It's only $20 more than that one." :P
Like, there's this really nice 2TB, but I dunno, even if it's only an extra $30 from the 1TB I was planning on, 2 seems like serious overkill. I don't even use that much space for Steam.

I've had a 500GB on my WiiU since I started downloading more eShop titles. They're usually more heavy in data but really it's hard to find a game that'll be 1GB or more unless it's a retail game. VC games are like 20-80MB usually give or take, so if you're planning on downloading a lot of retail games it will definitely benefit you to have the 1TB to last you the entire WiiU generation. I usually shove my eShop titles in there and keep the VC + retail game data on the actual console. The only eShop titles that stay on the system itself are the ones I'm actively playing, after that they get moved to the hard drive to make room for more.
I know for one thing that Assassins Creed III is 15-20GB, Wii Party U is 5.5GB, and Mario Kart 8 (with no DLC) is 5GB, so if you got those 3 you've already spent about 30.5GB (or the entire WiiU Deluxe) Just to give you a rough idea of retail file sizes if you didn't know...

On amazon I order from prime, so its pretty much guaranteed. I am also used to ordering from amazon too, so I know how to check into the sealers.. Like I only order from 100% and the only time I go even a tiny bit lower is when I check theyre ratings and they had a stupid down rating like 4 years ago or something. This isnt mentioning I rarely get used games (especially discs).
Just to point out... I saved 10 bucks on a new games of mario that was 50 over the summer when the eshop had it for 60 (not counting the tax they give you). So keep in mind that nintendo does not match theyre competitors prices on new games... and digital games are not the same price or cheaper. All I can say if you can afford it then go ahead. I'm kind of thinking at a college kids stand point. lol

I got the 32GB I think (I think that's what it was).

I tend not to buy games if a physical disc is available, which is pretty good considering I probably wouldn't be able to store more than 2 retail titles on the system at any one time and when the Wii U servers finally go down (as they will in the future) it would be pretty annoying if I couldn't redownload all the other games I bought :/

Outside of that though I own a few VC titles (5), a few digital only games (2) and DLC (HW,MK8). It doesn't seem like much in my opinion (especially since I assumed VC titles would be tiny files) but I only have about 16GB of storage left.

So if you're planning on going digital I highly recommend that you get the TB storage to make sure, especially if you plan on keeping all your games downloaded.

Thank you. c:

All the games I've bought directly from Amazon have always come sealed. Even the few times I buy from a third party seller through Amazon I've gotten a sealed copy a lot of the time.

I honestly prefer them unsealed though...The packaging is usually awkward to take off and as long as the game is in good condition otherwise, I couldn't care about the seal. Guess it's nice to know you're definitely the first owner of it though.

First of all, thank you to everyone who's posted so far. c:

That is definitely something worth considering in itself. Though I always download all the things, but given how the eshop works on the Wii U, I guess if there are problems with the console you have to send it to them and tell them everything you bought through the eshop?

I dunno, it'll probably be more of a happy mix of digital and boxed copies -- always on the side of "whatever is cheapest and in the best condition" -- but I do still prefer to save shelf space... Though I probably have a few games I could sell. Like most of my 360 games, given that both of my consoles are RROD'd.
But I digress. Back to the point.

That is definitely why I prefer it! I like knowing, for sure, I'm getting a pristine copy of the game. Not someone's "like new" disc that arrives all scratched up and shot to hell. Now granted that only happened ONCE, and I did recently buy Yoshi's New Island through Amazon with no problems. Got a sealed copy from a third-party seller.
But even buying used games is expensive enough that I'd rather just spend the extra $20~ to ensure I'm getting a clean copy.

As I did previously state, I do want more VC titles than anything else. But there are several games that I'd just prefer to have digital, like Smash Bros. or really any mutilplayer game, just so I'm not swapping out the discs all the time. I wish the 3DS had the NNID like it does now when I first got it, I wish I had Animal Crossing digital because I pop it in and out so often to play for, like, 10 minutes. Or Pokemon X, trading between White 2 and X when I did the Dream Radar crap?
I'm surprised my 3DS's cartridge springs are still holding up, tbh.

Good to know about Amazon Prime, though. To both you and katronsensei. I am looking at this from the 'poor college kid' point of view, but I'm also looking at it as: $60 to download a game OR $50-60 +$30 in gas to go to a store and physically pick it up (since we have no local used options, just wal-mart) OR $50-60 to buy it online and get it a week later.

I'm not entirely sure how getting your digital titles back works since my Wii U and 3DS haven't had any problems. From what I hear though, it's an utter ballache. Especially in the future when the servers are off. If something goes wrong with your console, there's practically no way to get those games back.

Nintendo's digital platform is in serious need of an overhaul. It was highly outdated and anti-user friendly even when it was brand new.

Eh, I always find that it differs.

If a the price difference is barely anything, I'll just pay the 'extra' ?5 and buy a new version. Preowned prices tend to drop significantly after the first few months though where it gets to the point that you're paying around ?20 less for a preowned copy. I find it hard to say no to half price.

Nintendo games don't tend to sell for much cheaper preowned though. I think that mostly has something to do with the fact that Nintendo games don't really drop in price at all, or that it at least takes them forever to do so. Probably because they have the 'monopoly' on their consoles and are pretty much only competing with themselves...You kind of have to pay whatever price they ask because what else are you going to buy?

So what did you guys buy for an external HD working with the Wii U ? Nintendo recommends a self powered external HD. I don't know if USB Keys or non self-powered HD work.

I have the deluxe one and I only buy the physical disc of games unless it is something I cant buy at the store..Like the toejam and earl etc...oldies or something like that. I have plenty of space .

I never physically go to a store for anything. I order everything off prime (food too, woot).. though I can take a 60 cent bus ride across Houston. Yay?

I know you can still access prime deals even when youre not a prime member, you just have to buy like 35 bucks or something in orders for the free shipping... though considering most games are over that I don't see a problem. But yeah I don't bother if its only a 5-10 buck difference. However, say a 20 buck difference, yeah I would bother. Depends on how you view your money and if your patient. All I'm saying is.. keep a eye on prime deals when you can because you might find a deal that will save you 20 bucks and prime deals are guaranteed by Amazon from amazon. But yeah if its 5-10 dollar difference I see your point.

I also wouldn't go out anywhere for a game though. I just do online orders cause of convenience for me.

I hope you enjoy your system though! The wii u has amazin graphics and gameplay. So far I've played Mario Kart 8, Wind Waker, Smash Bros, Lego Hobbit, Pikmin 3, and a few others. Graphics are lovely and pleasant for the eyes.

Any old USB-powered hard drive (of 2TB or less) should be fine, just buy a $7 y-cable (like this one) and plug the HDD into BOTH USB ports in the back of the console. With that y-cable it'll get a sufficient power supply from the console. c:

Unfortunately the free shipping for non-Prime members is 5-8 days. :c

Boyfriend has Prime, so I did order a few games for it through Prime that should be here tomorrow and Thursday (as well as 2 Pro Controllers for us and a screen protector for the GamePad since wal-mart doesn't sell anything for the Wii U except games? lol).

So FINGERS CROSSED, lol. We'll see how things go. Everything I bought was Prime, specifically, because I can't wait a week for my controllers.

And yes, on that note, I bought my console yesterday, spent a good 3-4 hours unboxing and setting it up, lol. Am so excited. c:
But all Wally World had that I wanted was Hyrule Warriors, and I cannot get used to the GamePad to play it.. at all. lol. I liked how the GP works with SMB 3D World, though. But it is a much more, uh, "casual" game, so it was easier to get used to the massive tablet in my hands. I'm too used to a keyboard and mouse set up now, lol.

I haven't bought an external HDD YET. I can't really afford a whole lot for it this month, the console and the controllers for me and boyfriend killed me. Do have Smash Bros. and Wind Waker on the way, though. Haven't even dipped my toes into the eshop yet.. So we'll see how everything goes. c:

Ohp. And I don't really go to the stores often, myself. Agoraphobia. Actually only went to wal-mart for the console because I felt safer picking it up than having it shipped to me. It's weird - I bought my laptop and all my desktop parts through Newegg without a second thought. But the idea of a console getting damaged during shipping bothers me enough to actually leave the house. I dunno. Worth the trip, at least, lol.

i didn't get one, i probably won't need it anyway. i usually buy physical games for home consoles. but really 32gb is kinda sad, since ps4 has about 400gb included.
