I can't seem to pin down any single topic through the search engine about wifi troubles. So, hopefully I can just put this here?

Basically, I've tried everything! Changing to WEP, disabling security altogether, single port forwarding, manually setting up internet connection via static IP, disabling my firewall.

Nothing seems to work, and I can't leave my town. But I can connect to the internet without changing anything, it just won't let me visit other people's towns.

I've tried to visit other towns with my old DS Lite and have had these problems, but I got a new 3DS XL today and AC:NL, so I don't know if it will work or not.

Can anybody help me? What I really need is for someone to open their gates so I can see if it'll let me through on my new DS. I also plan on calling Nintendo, but they won't really be any use if I don't have someone who can help me test to see their changes worked or not.

Hey. I had this problem recently and made a post about it yesterday to help others struggling with this: http://www.belltreeforums.com/showthread.php?106265-Error-018-0512&p=1864468#post1864468

Basically, what I did was give my DS a static IP, put it in a DMZ zone and enter its MAC address into my router settings. Sorry if you've already tried this. It was entering the MAC address that finally solved it for me. Hopefully this will work for you too :) There's a video in my thread that I used to help me with this, so it's there if you need it! :) Good luck. You can also test to see if it works with me if you like.

I hope it works! D:
I also have a similar problem where I can go to other peoples towns, and they can go to mine but the connection only lasts 0-15 minutes before it disconnects. This happens for every game on my 3DS but it works perfectly for my Wii and PC. Do you guys know what to do?

Hmm, I don't think I've tried the MAC address. I will definitely give this a try.

Thank you so much for your help!
No problem :) Let me know if it works
Also, remember to add the MAC address of your computer to the list so it doesn't kick you off

Don't mess with the MAC address to much. I killed my router that way oops
Oo O.o It's been working fine for me so far but since it only allows devices to connect when their MAC addresses have been put on the list I tend to just switch it off when I've done what I wanted to do on the DS.

Hmm. I read loads of posts from other users who were having this problem when I was looking for the solution to mine but I think most of the threads about connection problems were pointed towards the nintendo guide to set an IP address for your console and put it in the DMZ. You could try following the guide I already posted and see if that works but I don't know how much success people have had with it in regards to connection dropping. If it doesn't work, you can just change the DS settings back to automatically detect internet settings, turn off DMZ and the MAC address and google the problem again to see if any solution is available. Good luck :)

Edit: Sometimes DS consoles can be a bit dodgy with the internet. My boyfriend never managed to get his old DS working with his internet and it worked fine with every other device (including my DSi). I guess it just happens sometimes for whatever reason... Not great.

Yeah. :/ Thanks! I'm getting a Wii U soon, I hope the same problem doesn't occur there.

I've got the exact same problem! Tried to invite someone over to visit today to take one of my villagers and it just would not work! My fianc? has tried everything (he is much more tech savvy than me!) He says that my MAC code isn't recognised by the PC so he can't put it on DMZ! Think I may need to save up for a new router!

i have tried pretty much everything for my 3ds as well. i connect flawlessly with some people, but a lot of people i get errors with. does anyone know why this is?

it's really frustrating though, because it "errors" 4/5 times. and if it errors with a person, it will never work no matter how many times you try to connect, or try another day etc. it's really frustrating when trying to get dreamies to move in. like you make up plans and if the other person don't TT, you have to wait for about a week and set away time just to get disappointed.

my best friend and i was gonna play ac a lot together (she has moved away quite a bit) and we can't connect at my place, only at my other friend's place. we can however, play pok?mon xy just flawlessly together online from where i live! trade, battle, see eachother online etc.

does anyone else have this issue, where they can connect with some people, but mostly not at all?

These problems all seem to be in the same vein. If you google any of them the others come up. It's such a mess. I can't really offer any other advice other than what I did for my DS. Hopefully someone else will be able to offer a solution. (Or nintendo will finally get around to addressing these since their current suggestions aren't working )

My fianc? seems to think that setting the DS onto the DMZ list will fix it as it will bypass the firewall. Only problem for me is that my router is old and doesn't like my DS MAC

Yeah, people had success without the MAC step so you can just try it with DMZ and it might work :) Good luck

I had major success with the MAC and DMZ bit, however, I did have to disable my security completely. Thank you SO much, CandyClouds.

BUT when adding the MAC and DMZ filtering, I was unable to connect to the internet with a computer. Each time I want to connect with another player, I have to undo and redo a lot but I think it's worth it.

Yay! :D Glad I could help. Did you add your computers MAC address to the list?

We have MAC filtering on our modem. So if you want to use our internet I have to manually input the MAC address for the device in, for the Modem to accept it. Works great when I have to take the internet away from my daughter for not doing chores.

A couple of times I have had connection issues. I reset my modem and then deletion the connection off of the Nintendo and then after them modem is up and running I add the connection again and then connect. Stopped a lot of frustrating errors.

No, I didn't. Do you think that will allow a computer to connect? :)

Yup :) After you set up the MAC thing for a device to connect using your internet its MAC address must be put in to the router settings. That should solve it. Happy Mayor-ing! :P

Haha. So glad my mum isn't that good with technology. She was afraid to turn the router off in case it messed up the internet (probably still is).
