Okay so I'm kinda scared right now because my 3ds has never glitched and I've had it since last Christmas but today it glitched so I'm posting here to see if anyone else knows what might have happened.

So I turned on my 3ds this afternoon and I went into New Leaf (I have a cartridge by the way. I'm not sure if that's relevant or not) and I went into my town. It was raining and I picked up my mail from my mailbox where I had one letter from Gulliver. I then went over to the other side of my town. I was stopped by Deli who wanted the hula doll that I got from Gulliver and I gave it to him. At this point I stopped playing for a second to pay attention to what was happening around me irl and I half stood up, and when I looked down at my 3ds again it was completely off.

This was weird for a couple of reasons, the first being that the screen where you have to press the button again to turn it all the way off was not there, it was just off. The second being that it hadn't been almost out of battery, the battery light was blue. I turned my 3ds back on and it seemed to work fine so it was just a little weird.

I rebooted New Leaf and panicked. The menu screen that shows your town and a villager walking around looked like my town and had all of my landscaping and stuff, but it had snow everywhere (I don't time travel and had my time set to real time) and Deli was wearing a party hat. There also might have been Christmas lights on the trees but I don't really remember. When I started my game, I asked Isabelle for help and saw that the time was set to January 1st 2012, 12:00am. This was years before I even got my 3ds. I set it to the current time and continued and everything was exactly the same as when I first booted it up. It was raining, I had a letter from Gulliver with a hula doll in it, and I had all of the same stuff in my inventory that I had before this all happened. The only difference was that Resetti came and chastised me for resetting. I then went on to play with my sister for several hours and everything seemed normal.

Does anyone know what might have happened? Is this some freak accident or has it happened to other people? Is there something specific that caused it? And probably most importantly is my game starting to corrupt? I don't know very much about glitches but I've tried pretty hard to avoid doing anything that might cause a glitch. The only thing I do sometimes is that trick with the bug net to get on top of buildings and stuff. I really don't want to lose my town as I love it a lot. Thank you for anything that could help me understand.

It sounds more like a problem with your 3DS than with your game. Did the time on your 3DS change too? I've heard of a few incidents of peoples' 3DS clocks resetting themselves, but I don't know what causes it. You were smart to change the time before loading your game, at least, so that it wasn't affected by the time change.

Since the clock reset, I would say it was an issue with your 3DS and not your game. The only way your town would have corrupted would be if it had happened when you were saving. I've seen threads recently about something similar to this happening, and it seemed to have something to do with an internal connection becoming loose. I have no insight into that, and you might want to ask Nintendo, but just make sure you're not jostling your 3DS when you save until you get a definitive answer.

I wonder if Deli has a headache and wonders why he was briefly at a New Years' party? ;)

Thank you. It seems that my 3ds's date and time were reset. Strange. It didn't happen while I was saving (I know to not do that from reading other people's experiences with losing their towns.) so we can rule that out. I'll see what I can do about asking Nintendo in the morning, maybe that will help.

Also poor Deli. He must be so confused. One moment he has a hula doll, the next he's at a New Year's party, and the next it's september again. Poor guy. Must think he's going crazy. <:)

Ohh that incident happens to my brother's 3ds! :o it randomly turns off even if you didn't turn it off by yourself and resets the date to the same date and time that you mentioned. I really don't know what causes it or how to fix it :| but yea, you're not alone. I don't think it corrupts the file though, when we set the time back it goes back to normal. :o

It sounds like an issue with your 3DS, perhaps the battery from the looks of things. I know after time depending on how you treat your 3DS, the battery may come lose and just randomly accidentally slip out and fall back in inside. I assume.

The date and time resets whenever the battery is taken out, and the time and date is reset to all games.

You're game is fine, don't worry.

As others have said, it's an issue with your 3DS.

If I were you, I would get a new 3DS or a "New 3DS" depending on if you want a new model or are content with the current (and if you can wait until early 2015). If this starts happening more and more, chances are that it will happen when you save too and then your whole town would be gone. And it's not fun to lose progress too even when you don't lose your town, right?

The only advice I can give you is try to keep the 3DS steady, not move it around unnecessarily while playing. Don't apply fast and hard movements like swinging it around. That might make the risk slighter if it's a problem with loose parts inside the 3DS, but I'm not sure.

That happened to my iPad and I had to pay $100 to get it replaced, dumb thing crashed and set the time back to 1984 every time it did :c
Yeah, I'd replace it. Wouldn't take the risk. Ask Nintendo if they can do anything

Might as well SEND it to Nintendo if you can. If they can't fix it you'll probably get a new 3DS.

You didn't have a 3DS in January 2012? Wow, I got mine December 2010.

Hi I wanted to say that it has happened to me too. I was playing my 3DS while commuting to work (playing Tomodachi Life) and I closed the cover to attend to something irl. When I went back to the game, the system had offed by itself. However, when I turned it on the clock had not reset.

Wow, I had no idea the 3ds can glitch like this. So scary. Especially if you are trying to keep dreamies or you play Tomodachi Life which really punishes you for time changes. Wow.
