Why were the animals so rude in the first game?

I have never played the first one and was interested and looked up some videos. I can't believe they would include this.

What was wrong with Japanese culture back in 2000? Why wasn't there a massive uproar among American parents? Why didn't they picket Nintendo? Why didn't Disney make a competitor game?

If the original Animal Crossing was more like New Leaf it would sell 11 million or even 20 million instead of the paltry 3 million copies it sold in our timeline.

It would probably have been more popular among girls and women and would have probably gotten more females into gaming!

I hate to disagree but.......I actually liked them more when they were meaner. Now even the cranky are nice which I find a bit upsetting. The snooty were also snootier back then but now the snooty, normal, and peppy to me sound all the same. I wish they would have kept some mean-ness especially in resetti who is much nicer now. Back then he would threaten you saying he will erase your whole town and was definitely not optional :D

I wish my current cranky villagers (hamphrey, rodeo, roscoe), were a bit mean to me. They are too nice.

I don't know .... I have 3 Snooty villagers and they're all pretty mean :"D
I like that they're able to warm up to you in NL though ^-^

Was this really necessary? :( Not cool.

Anyway, to answer the thread question/title: the GameCube AC game was my first AC game and I still own it actually. The dialogue for the villagers and even NPCs are very different, especially in NL. The ""rudeness"" in the GameCube one was pretty refreshing to me; they toned it down considerably in the next titles and certain things changed due to translation/stylistic choices. One notable example of them toning down a character is how Resetti is optional in NL. If you know how his dialogue is after you don't save in the GameCube version as well as WW. . .it's quite a change.

I think Nintendo wants the game to appeal to a wide demographic (which equals more $) so the dialogue has to reflect that. The older games had their nice moments too. It wasn't all sass and snark. c:

I don't know why they changed it (probably to be more friendly to younger audiences) but personally I loved the rude villagers, I thought they made the game way more interesting
