Splatoon Why is there so much hype around Splatoon?

I'm pretty sure I've touched on this before, but Splatoon is actually the first shooter I've ever really felt a genuine interest in playing, because it appeals in a way a lot of ways the rest of the genre does not. First off, I don't have to play a guy (big dang plus that they actually give us a choice of character), and I don't have to camp out in ridiculous high areas to snipe people with headshots in order to get ahead (I can even avoid conflict altogether if I want to, and concentrate on coloring the map!), I don't have to listen on headset to my "team" make nasty and inappropriate comments, I don't get discriminated for being a "girl playing a shooter", it's filled with SO MUCH COLOR instead of the dull, repetitive earthy-tones that a lot of shooters are generally known for, there's no grotesque display of blood or death (they splat in ink and then return), the weapons and skills are fun and innovative for the world they've created (a lot of the game mechanics are really innovative and creative), multi-player is smooth and I've had little to no lag problems whatsoever, and it's just a REALLY fresh look into a genre that has been done into the ground. Nintendo took a risk in not just making another Mario game and I applaud them for it. I think this is a good sign that they're branching out more and that makes me really excited.

The bottom line? Splatoon makes me incredibly happy to play. I genuinely have fun with it even when I don't win. It was worth every second of the hype I had for it and I look forward to the loads of DLC content and updates to come in just the next few months. Worth every penny I spent for the game.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
Steel Diver
Rusty's Real Deal Baseball
Xenoblade

*The first I.P people care about.

I think that it's actually the first new I.P from actual Nintendo themselves since Pikmin (not including the fitness stuff), which is likely what people mean.

IIRC, Miyamoto made Steel Diver.

I care about Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. It's one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. Same goes for Xenoblade Chronicles.

I think I`m going to buy it soon. In honesty I wasn`t sure at all about this game pre release, because I felt it looked a little simplistic and stale, but having read more about it and seen some footage, I`m starting to understand the appeal.

Its quite gutsy to make a shooter like this, I have to atleast give Nintendo some respect for that.

Splatoon is the first shooter game that actually made me have interest and made me think of buying the Wii U just for it. I think the game is visually stunning and very different from other shooter games. It is a constantly improving game with new maps and weapons, cultivating an environment where tactics can evolve which will keep the game fresh. It is a risky move by Nintendo but if it pays off, Splatoon will be up in the ranks alongside AC, Pokemon, Zelda and Mario.

I still don't understand the fuss, even after trying it at a shop.

It's a fresh and new shooter that isn't from Valve.

Not to mention, its Nintendo's first new IP in years.

So I guess Xenoblade Chronicles, Steel Diver and The Wonderful 101 don't exist.

Not to mention the tons new stuff they've got on the Eshop and all the dead franchises they're bringing back, like Starfox and Kid Icarus.

Eh, Kid Icarus' sudden return annoyed me :/
I love Xenoblade though.
MONADOE BOOIIIIII

I actually do usually like shooters

Well in that case, I guess all I really need to say is that kills aren't rewarded at all other than it telling you how many you got in the last round. No kill based gamemodes, no K/D records, no killstreaks, no ranks based on kills, no leveling based on kills, no unlocks based on kills.

Rewarding kills destroys competitive PvP game modes in most other games and makes them largely unplayable. I like objective game modes more than mindless slaughterfests, so Splatoon is instantly fantastic.

But you've played it and it still doesn't appeal to you, so there's not much point in me going into what I like about the weapon selection, balance, mechanics, character maneuverability, customization etc. etc. The main reason I was interested in the first place was the objectives.
