Splatoon Why is there so much hype around Splatoon?

Something new, looks like nintendo went out of their comfort zone for this one a lot. Plus it looks hella fun.

Exactly my thought as well. Sure it may be a family game but it's not overly stupid or just child-friendly like other games.

Is it fun if your internet is busted for the day and dont have any other controllers? :-P

Because its a colourful creative game that doesnt completely rely on skill unlike other shooters.

What shooters are you referring to here?

A lot of modern competitive shooters don't require much skill to be good in at all. They mostly rely on 'who saw who first' which is where the term 'twitch shooter' came from, along with the fact that most guns will kill within 1 or 2 bullets. It's why games such as CoD are so popular among casuals since the skill requirement to do well is pretty low (though at professional levels it's obviously a lot higher...But I doubt that applies to most people). They're the gaming equivalent of whack-a-mole.
I guess knowing where people usually 'hang out' or 'camp' helps but I don't really see that as skill.

To me Splatoon is more similar to the 'old skewl' shooters like Doom, Quake or even Halo. Larger health pools with players make each gunfight a small battle rather than a round of whack-a-mole. That alone makes the game a lot more skill based than a large amount of modern FPS.

There's more than that which I could mention (such as unfair unlock systems and mechanics which always favor the winning teams rather than helping the losers recover from a loss) but considering matches in shooters are mostly dependent on how good your team is at shooting (surprisingly) regardless of what the objective is, the actual 'shooting gameplay' is the most important to me...And Splatoon looks to have more 'skill based gameplay' than a lot of modern competitive FPS's in that regard.

I've played some of the shooters like CoD and the modern warefares. To me it just seems that they require alot more precision and concentration. I always end up dying because Im taking too long to aim XD. In splatoon, you could just go to one corner of the map and paint it your teams colour, and whether you are getting kills or not its still helping your team. Thats why I like it so much :p

I don't get it either but I don't like shooters so...the only fun thing to me is the fact that you can turn into a squid and that's not enough to make me want to buy it.

Maybe if I win the lottery I'll get it. But for now it's super low priorty, or never buy at all.

True about painting the map but that can be said about various game modes in most shooters. You could just go around standing in 'zones' for similar 'hold the territory' type matches in other games for example, or run and hide with the 'oddball'. Whilst you're not necessarily killing anybody, you're still helping. I think all shooters have their own variation of these types of matches, the communities just focus more on the Team Deathmatch gamemodes more.

Splatoon focusing more on these 'objective' type game modes though is nice, especially since I prefer having a real objective rather than 'shoot more dudes'. I get sick of Team Deathmatches. If you try other objective game modes in other games, all the players are just going for kills rather than the objective anyway...

The precision and concentration in CoD maybe, since headshots give more points and a guaranteed kill. However, you can also 'spray and pray' with any fully automatic in the general vicinity of an enemy and get the same results since only 2 or 3 of those 50 bullets actually need to hit. Obviously the 'precision' will make a difference with snipers and other generally slower firing weapons (which obviously does show more skill) but overall, the skill level to do reasonably well with online multiplayer is pretty low thanks to the viability of 'spray and pray'.

When you look at really good players though just raking in kills non-stop, they're reacting to seeing other players before even you the viewer notice them. Those 'twitch reflexes' are a lot more important to those games.

Compared to something with larger health/shield bars though like Halo, precision can make a much bigger difference. Headshots make much more of a difference since they can drain an entire shield in a few shots compared to the usual 'entire clip' with hits to the rest of the body.
Plus these games are often 'faster paced', for lack of a better term, with people jumping around and (in the case of Doom or Quake) moving at stupidly high speeds. It's much harder to hit a guy in the head when they're running and jumping around like that, which is often absent with other shooters.

So if you see somebody first and shoot them in the head they have time to actually react to it, so if they're a good player they will probably out-maneuver you and take you down with a few well placed headshots as you flail around spraying bullets at the wall screaming "HACKER!!! OMG!!! I BONED YOUR MOM!!!"

They both require some sort of skill, just that Splatoon is more comparable to the Halo/Quake variety than the more modern CoD style.
But this is pretty irrelevant to the thread. I was just curious to what you originally meant to it requiring less skill, which I kind of do agree with to a degree since it's more about painting stuff than getting a high K/D ratio :3

I'll be honest...Turning into a squid and just gracefully swimming around in an area filled with my teams color without a care in the world is something I'm looking forward to.

I'm easily pleased.

To me, this seems like a great breath of fresh air. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of shooters - the closest thing to the typical "brown of duty" I've played and enjoyed is Borderlands 2, and that's not even competitive. However, Splatoon seems to really bring something new to the far-too-recycled genre, and it looks genuinely interesting. Although it helps that the primary objective ISN'T to murder the enemy team's face. Sure, it helps, but JUST murdering the enemy team's face is a train ride to Losersville.

Plus, it's nice to see Nintendo get out of their comfort zone for once. It really feels like Super Mario Galaxy and Kid Icarus Uprising have been the only games which Nintendo have been "creative" with as of late, so having something truly unique come out of Nintendo is a nice gift indeed. Plus, it's nice to have something original on WiiU, too. Sure, Smash Bros. is great and Wind Waker is fun, but they're not exactly original new games.

I'm super hyped for it. I hate modern shooter games cause they're not fun or playful, idk how to describe it lol. I would prefer playing as an inkling shooting ink at squids than as a person killing other people/zombies/whatever. and the ink makes it so you don't even have to kill other players, just spray your ink everywhere and you'll be helping your team which is awesome. The only reason I may not get it is that I don't know when I'll find time to play it anymore and I don't want to dish out a ton of money on a game I'll play maybe for a month and then have to put down cause I'll be busy with so much other stuff. :'(

I was hyped from the beginning for a few reasons.

Part of it is the fact that it's a new Nintendo IP. How often do those happen?
It also looks different from almost every other shooter I've seen (as in, it's not brown or incredibly Sci-Fi centered). Colors? In a video game? Wow!

To top it off, from day one, people who played it were talking about all the positive experiences that were pretty much immediate.

Now that the test fires have happened, I can definitely say I find it really fun, even just watching is great.

Not to mention quite a few people have had physical retail copies for about a week now and are saying how amazing the singleplayer is too, so that's a pretty big bonus on top of having an awesome multiplayer focused game.

I'm so glad a topic was brought up about this game's hype zel. I was honestly confused by all the hype myself...Now the popularity makes more sense.
Still amazing how much fan stuffs/other things this series has generated in a matter of months, and before a real release...Reminds me of the old Touhou fans in a way.

I actually agree/see where you're coming from with this.

I usually don't 'get into' new franchises at all until I've had some hands on experience with them, especially since a lot of the time they end up failing to meet expectations. Buying a new IP on release day is a very rare thing for me, buying any merchandise for it is practically something that never happens (I don't want to be stuck with merchandise for a series I end up not liking).

Yet I've been on the Splatoon hype train for months. Pre-ordered the game, a T-shirt and both the boy + girl amiibo's. I've broken every one of my usual 'rules' with this one.

Feels kind of bad that I've been sucked into the hype mostly by bright colors and a cool theme tune...I thought I was better than that...

It's amazing seeing all the hype build up around this game. I remember it being announced last year and I was cool, squid kids. Always found the art style of the game to be very unique, a fresh breath to shooter games! Fast forward to today and everyone is talking about it (it was even trending on twitter a couple of times).

Also I pre-ordered the splatoon wii u bundle cause it was a good deal and I need a wii u :D

I've only just recently heard about it, and I'm still pretty hyped for it. The only thing remotely close to a shooter game that I've only tried playing once was Metroid, and that wasn't my cup of tea, but this thing is different altogether; the viewing angel is third person, the colors are fantastic, and it's ink instead of actual projectiles. It does remind me of Super Mario Sunshine with the ink everywhere and having to splat your own down/spray it away with FLUDD, but I loved that game, so this one looks pretty promising so far!

My only issue with it at this point is the lack of co-op online. I have two sisters, and it would make the game entirely if you all could play together, even if only just on Turf Wars. We'd also need to purchase one or two Wii U pro controllers for the one-on-one, the only way two of us would be able to play together unless they add a feature like a split screen similar to Mario Kart.

But otherwise the characters are cute and creative, and the game does look fun!

because its a new refreshing game in the shooter genre
we need more colorful, less gritty shooters like splatoon, TF2, and sunset overdrive
also there are people who think it looks good
not everyone has the same opinion

I mean, seriously. The art is filled with cosplays, images, and all sorts of stuff for a game that isn't released yet. And its just a shooter. I don't get it.
Nintendo went all out on the hype-machine. I got caught up in it and cannot escape.

Quoting the title of the thread "Why is there so much hype around Splatoon?"
Simple... It is because the game is ink-redible. XD
