Why don't some people like you talking to their villagers?

I'm relatively new to the online aspect of AC and have noticed that the rules people set for visiting their islands can vary quite a lot.

I'm obviously more than happy to abide by whatever rules the host wants, but one I don't understand is when they ask that you don't talk to their villagers.

I'm just curious as to why that is? And why some others don't seem to mind at all!

It's mostly people who are used to what happens in NL. If you talk to a villager in NL as a visitor, the villagers will keep talking about the visitor forever. Things like, "Remember when x came to visit us?" I loaded my NL save after not playing for years, and villagers still mention visitors who I don't even remember anymore. Villagers will also sometimes show letters that the host has sent, which some people are embarrassed about.

But I'm pretty sure it's different in NH now. Now, villagers will talk about visitors regardless if they talked to them or not. But they don't seem to remember visitors as long. They usually only mention them once, and then they won't bring it up again, and there seems to be a time limit. For example, my villagers never mention visitors that came a few weeks ago. I'm not sure if they will show letters to visitors still.

There's also always playground rumors that talking to villagers will make them more likely to move-out, or other silly things like that.

a lot of the “don’t talk to my villager(s)” rules are because of the previous games’ tendencies to talk about said visitor when you talked to them. however, NH isn’t the same since the simple act of visiting alone causes the villagers to talk about you regardless. a lot of is also code for - “please ask for my permission.” if you’re there to trade or get a DIY, etc. that’s really all you’re there for. if you run around talking to villagers and doing other things you initially didn’t ask for permission first, it can come across as a little rude. some hosts are also protective of their villagers, etc.

apart from the mentioning visitors thing that everyone has already brought up, someone posted a thread a few days ago about a villager wearing a custom design a few days after talking to a visitor. Not sure if that's how it works, but its worth looking into or asking around on the forums about. In my case I love talking to other villagers so when I'm waiting on someone's island for something I always ask and everyone has been fine with it so far.

Now THAT is a scary thought! If that’s true, I can sympathize with wanting to keep them undisturbed and would follow suit. But are they sure that visitor didn’t just use the Able’s machine?

I am so paranoid about my villagers wearing anything I haven’t okayed that I won’t even make a custom clothing design in case I accidentally make it available to them. So, at least I’m a safe visitor to talk to everyone’s villagers if I ever come to someone’s island!

I've had visitors, but I haven't seen any of my villagers talking about those visitors in a long time. Maybe those who visited my island didn't talk to the villagers. I haven't had any visitors since March or early April. I can't remember.

Thanks for all the replies.

It seems to be a hangover from earlier games in most cases, then.

I've had people from here come to trade who literally stood at the edge of my airport ramp for 30 seconds then left and a villager has always mentioned them afterwards, which is exactly the same as what happens any time my IRL friend visits for an hour or so and and chats to them all.

As I said, if that's the host's rules, then that's cool - there's no need to chat to random villagers when you're there for a trade / DIY swap event anyway - I just wanted to understand why it happens.

The villagers usually mention people they talk to and people probably don't want their villagers mentioning strangers.

Our choice to not have villagers eternally babble on about random people we may never see again, was taken away.

Now every villager talks about every visitor.

They mention anyone who visits your island, whether they speak to them or not.

Heck, they even sometimes mention islands you've visited, too!

Each time, it's only been a brief mention, then they don't bring it back up.

Interesting! Good to know!

I've only had my brother and sister talk to my villagers and they're the only ones they've mentioned so far. They haven't mentioned any other visitor, even though I've had people come to my island. Perhaps they need to stay longer. Usually they're for trades so they're gone in a minute or two.

They only mention them once though, don't they?

I've never had a villager mention a random visitor I traded with days after they visited.

It didn't sound like they visited ables, or at least didn't post the design in their shop. Heres the post from a few days ago

thats just nonsense fear. I did hundreds and hundreds of trades yet villagers never showed customs designs NOT displayed at tailor. So it means that some visitor sneaked inside the tailor and put up their design. the host didn't notice and villager wore it. its impossible for a villager to wear something not displayed. I've been playing since launch and put up designs for villagers in tailor. So I would have noticed a foreign design immediately.
We don't need this custom design thing transform into another animal crossing urban legend please lol
