Why do people wear these as an accessory?

I've got 11 bow ties, and most of them have a story.

My first one is baby blue, and got it when I was a groomsmen in my cousin's wedding.

Second one I got was pink, for the Breast Cancer Awareness thing at my school.

Third (and my favorite) is a nice dark blue, and I got it for when I went on a cruise a few months ago.

A bunch of my other ones I just bought for any occasion. Trying to find a blue and yellow one. (School colors, ya know?)

Yes, people have worn them to school here. I think they're ugly. Red and blue on glasses don't look right.
