I'm actually curious, as a lot of people complain when an OC has a Japanese names/cultures ETC.

Like when people give adopts, characters etc Japanese names even though they are actually Japanese

if it has traditional japanese clothing some artists find it too difficult to draw. oh and it might be seen as weeaboo culture which is kind of looked down on by some haha

as for names not sure

I can understand artists having problems, it's just randoms that I don't understand
And to be honest, I don't think that many people on here are a "weeaboo"(seriously, where does that word even come from) and the majority of people with OCs usually have a variant :/

I don't see a problem with it. There are some really nice Japanese names out there. If you name your character one then so be it.

I would agree with you on that one

yeah but lots of people kind of generalize it and put labels on people without any second look really. some people will see a person with an avatar with an anime or manga character and instantly label them a weeaboo. japanese names might appear generic to some since theyre pretty popular. and youre right, the term is weird and i have no clue of its origin haha. i think theyre really cool personally

With some digging, I found this:
The term is a successive mutation of “Wapanese,” a derogatory slur referring to western Japanophiles with a strong bias towards Japanese cultural and tech imports.
"Wapanese" is apparently a merge of "Wannabe Japanese"

I agree with that ^
Most people on here just like anime or manga, not belive that Japan is the Holy Land.

Personally, I think everyone should look for what they're interested in and how they (may) show that interest. If that's having an username of Japanese orgin or whatever, then that's all fine by me.
And as said above, the term weaboo is something different then just having an image of an anime as your profile picture. A weaboo is someone that's so overly obsessed with Japanese culture to the point where they want to drag people with them while at the same time they see thereself as a Japanese native.
I've no problem with people showing any amount of interest in other cultures but when you claim you're 'one of them' I think you're going a bit too far...

Agreed. I like anime, manga, the culture, animals (oh my gosh Tanuki ;w;) and I am currently learning the language, but I will never consider myself a Japanese native...that's just silly.

Where do you find people complaining about Japanese names? What site do you be on LOL?
But to be real honest, they're probably upset because it's a lack of creativity, maybe? You create a character and your first thought is something Japanese, that's probably it. It's original but hey, what floats your boat.
Usually when I create characters(if it's a theme type OC, like character's design base of flowers), I may look up words that's flower related, some comes in Greek, Chinese, Indian, etc

But I suck at name making, literally all my characters are Bobs and Timmys

It's pretty popular in writing communities (especially young people whose interest in writing developed through Japanese anime) to give Japanese names to non-Japanese characters just because they sound cool and stand out against the western named characters in their stories. It's of course done with names from many cultures, but Japanese names are especially overused in this way that it stands out as a really popular choice. This reputation already existed a decade ago when I first got involved in writing forums.

Some people see it as people just copy-pasting their favourite anime characters into new settings, tweaking a few things, and claiming that they're original. Especially common if this character is created in a setting outside of Japan. This reputation/assumption has some truth in it as it has been done before - and a lot. People are 'inspired' by certain characters, so aim to create ones exactly like them.

I've seen it here, and I would have to agree with the naming depending on who the character actually is.

I would agree on the fact that it is bad when people take an existing character and tweaking a bit, but I don't mind if people are inspired. That is, if they are carbon-copies then that is what I would dislike.
Linking back to the original point, I can understand how people can associate, but I would say that you shouldn't judge people automatically.

I'm curious about what Gamzee said. Where are you getting this from? I've never/rarely seen a person being made fun of by giving their creations Japanese names.

Probabaly because it comes off as "weeabooish".

Personally, I have no problem as long as it's done well and fits in with whatever story oc is for and the oc has a good reason to have Japanese names/cultures.

I dunno.
I don't have a problem with it.

But, I'm anime watching trash so.

When I was 12, I made my first OC and his name was Kireihana.
:0

Because weebs

If your character doesn't look at all Japanese, and has no connection to Japan (or if their parents didn't since they do the naming) it's just not fitting at all. I have no problem with Japan or its culture, actually I'm interested in it, but it's just an overrused trait used by weeaboos/wannabe edgy kids
