Why didn't my trees grow?

I wanted to do some stunted trees, so I planted both kids of trees. 3 rows of 4 trees, plus a couple of extras. The two types of trees do not overlap.

Day 1 - They all grew. I stunted a few, but did not move them.
Day 2 - 1 cedar and 1 hardwood tree grew. Interestingly, both in the upper left hand corner. I stunted the hardwood. I also moved the middle rows of trees over one space.
Day 3 - Cedar that grew the second day grew again. I have stunted it. One other tree grew. The cedar in the bottom right corner.

What is going on? I have since scattered them in a few different place, hoping that make a difference. This seems so weird!

Sometimes when you have too many trees in one area, they don’t grow. Try growing them in a different area, then digging them up and planting them on the area you want them in.

I wondered if it might be something like that. I did move them around, so hopefully that helps. And yeah, once they're at the height I want, I should move them to their permanent place.

Here's a helpful guide on tree growth:

Basically, you can't have 12 or more trees on a 9x9 area.

Also be mindful of their proximity to water. My island has a small peninsula which juts from the east coast of the island, which I thought would be a nice place to plant a tree that I planned on cutting down later anyway, but alas. (I just wanted the Nook Miles tickets anyway, so it wasn't a big deal, but still rather annoying)
