Why can't I place this rug anywhere?!

Saharah was on my island today and I got a red Persian rug from her, which I was pretty happy about as it was one I wanted. But for some reason whenever I try to place it on the floor of my house I'm getting the "you can't place that here, it's too big!" error message. At first I thought maybe the furniture was preventing me from placing it ie. rug has to go down first, then furniture can be placed on top? Don't know if this is actually the case though) but with an empty floor it still wouldn't let me place it. Then I tried the basement cos it's a larger room but even in there, again with an empty floor, I'm still being told it's too big to be placed. What's going on??

Just try picking up what's on the main part of the floor until it works.

It's an enormous rug. It is the size of an entire smaller room. You may need to stand in the exact center?

Its a large rug, if you have any other rug based items on the floor, there will be no room for it.

Furniture doesn't affect rug placement.

I recommend putting it in your storage, go into designer mode (down arrow) to place it, if there's a spot for it it will drop the rug where it will fit.

Use the designer mode and it will center it for you. I had the same problem and this solve it.
Now that we are talking about this, we should be able to place rugs outside.

Agreed. We could in Happy Home Designer. Happy Home Designer has a few other features that NH doesn't have too, which is frustrating.

The only problem I think that kept them away from doing that is probably how much space it takes up data wise when out and about. People with those crowded city dream islands suffer from a hard lag due to all the placed items. If people kept placing rugs everywhere it might've caused the same problem.

HHD had massively smaller outdoor areas to decorate in and only had one of them loaded at a time. Throw a large rug throughout the island and it starts making a lot of data to keep track of.

I don't know why but I picture you fighting a giant rug that won't lay flat, lol. It's too powerful.
