Why can't I grow bushes here????

I want to be able to plant bushes around my path (with a gaps every now and then to get out) but they've started to wilt in some places here's the main place I've found so far...

There aren't any trees nearby or anything can someone tell me what's making them wilt?

This. Sometimes there's just a dead spot where nothing can grow. Try planting a tree and it'll be dead. Dead bushes too. Just plant flowers there or something :3

There might be too many connected bushes. Is it 12 or 13 you can have in a row?

it's either a dead spot, or it's trying to prevent you from creating what could possible become a fenced in area :0
