But Shep is one of my favourites, and he's a smug villager, too.
Somehow whereas Shep comes across as a bit goofy and playful, Marshal always seemed a bit aloof to me.

Well they can not make all the villagers the same so that makes sense
Yeah, it's actually fascinating how the relatively minor changes between the same base character types can elicit such different reactions in people.
Change the greeting, catchphrase and minor elements of their behaviour, and couple that with their appearance, and you can end up having very different reactions to fundamentally similar characters.
I honestly find it fascinating, and I'd love to see if different characters are more or less popular in different parts of the world, and then to dig into the reasons why that might be.

Animal crossing new horizons is just so unique they can make such similar characters so different and have a large variety it is so fun

Well I was totally clueless and decided to learn her 'QUAACK'. I never tought she would be spreading it around like weeds... ALL my other villagers started to say it D: I was happy when she wanted to move out XD

When I played City Folk, I really loved Gigi!
When I got into New Leaf, Cherry, Pekoe, and Marshal were my favs.
Now that I'm playing ACNH, Cherry was my starting villager which made me

My favorite is probably Felicity or Mint. Felicity has been my favorite since NL, and she has the cutest expressions, but I find that Mint usually repeats dialog less often than my other villagers, so she's risen to the top for me.
I like Pashmina, but she was the first villager on my island I'm itching to replace her with Muffy.

i kinda wanna break this up into two different sets of favorites and least favorites bc i have so many oop-
looking at the villagers on my current save, my favorite has to be Pecan and my least favorite has to be Hans.
i always thought Pecan was so pretty and omg she's stunning in acnh. they didn't have to pop off so hard w/ her but they did and i support it. i also think she's so sweet; i came across a conversation between her and Teddy where she said "Sometime I doubt you'll never grow up... and sometimes I hope you never do." and it just my heart. so mean and nice, a queen. i was considering her as a dreamie since i never really found a snooty i liked so much, but i think i'll let her stay (i'll still have to get rid of her for my picture collecting quest but i have her amiibo card).
Hans has a cool design and i dont personally think he's bad, it just annoyed me how i told myself i wouldnt villager hunt and go with the first villager i get from a nmt and he was there. i wanted a cranky but,, i had to take him. tragic.. and im also not a fan of smugs in this game.
my all time favorite has to be my boi Stitches. he rly just wants to talk to the bugs in his floor & chill and i will let him someday when i can get him on my island. my all time least favorite has to be the pig villagers in general. just something about them i rly hate, and i cant say one stands out more than others in general. the only ones i may not dislike as much is Agnes and Hugh but i just,,, their heads r so big. the current pig that has the most of my ire is Chops for being ugly, having the audacity to use my campsite first in a different save, and being smug. he's committed so many crimes here, and i cannot overlook that.

Despite having both marina and pietro on my island, hazel is still my favorite. She’s just so cute, despite what others say. I had her in my original NL town, and she was awesome.
I hate Deena, on the other hand. She complained about me not coming to her house, when I was right next to her house. Like WHAT

Diana and Apollo are my favorites. Diana was my random move in and she's so sweet and gives me the best items. I love her sassy dialogue with the smugs.
Apollo is so cool and I like the old man dialogue the crankies have.
Also they are both named after sibling gods. By pure chance I have them both on my island and got them fairly early so they are never leaving.
My least favorite is Stinky. He hasn't moved in yet but he will soon cause he's an amiibo. It was suppose to be Amelia but due to the game mechanics, she can't be amiibo in so it's Stinky instead. I'm going to TT to get him out once a friend has an empty plot.

I like the deer villagers a lot. I've had Fauna, Erik, Beau, and Diana in New Leaf, and I have Zell right now in NH. The dog villagers are some of my favorites too - I've had Daisy in NL and Portia in NH (she just moved out).
I don't think I actually have a set favorite villager. Beau is pretty good, so I guess he's a tentative favorite.
Least favorite? Chops. His aesthetic drives me up the wall, and his personality is just the icing on the cake.

I really like Ruby and most wolves! Marshal is super cute too!
I think that Moose is the ugliest villager of all time. I would definitely throw Moose into a volcano. His hair looks greasy to me and his catchphrase and facial expression make it seem like he's flirting with the player. He's just gross.
I also dislike Lucha because I talked to him while he was moving out of my friend's island in March and accidentally got him. He's really ugly too imo. I had him for over a month because I don't TT. I had to soft reset my campsite villager to get him to leave like 10 times.

Ahh my favorites are marshal, audie, and sherb! I love how marshal is so annoyingly rude. It’s so cute! Audie and Sherb are my babies. They have the prettiest coloring and such fun attitudes. I thought Raymond would make it onto my favorites list but I find him fun but not a fave.
Least favorite has got to be Judy. Hate her eyes, hate her coloring, hate everything about her. Her voice is a snooty voice too which I normally love, but does not suite her size and her “looks”. I also hate Elise bc I somehow ran into her 5x whole island hopping ._.
