*Raises hand* Through out time they do gather "garbage" in their home and remove their lovely themed items. (Marina has a huge ocean sunfish in replacement of her bed and that is NOT happening!)
I am also really selective to what kind of bugs/fishes I give them now.
For Stitches I am turning all the kiddie items into the pastel color because I hate the color contrast of the original set.
I usually just befriend the villagers with awesome furniture so they invite me over and I can buy their awesome stuff
And I send them furniture so their stuff ends up in Re-Tail or just given to me.
I tried, but I found that they usually get rid of it somewhat quickly. Even if I deny them favors, they eventually find a bug or new item to replace what I gave them. I think the best way to give them furniture is to have it be of a certain theme and color that they like. I think they will be more likely to keep it that way.
I reckon I'll get to that point, at this time I only have two dreamies in my main town and their houses are ok, but if anything happened to their house, I would do my best to put cool things back!
Lol I do this with all my villagers. I just got Groucho from my bf and his home has: lovely armoire, modern sofa, modern table, some bug, green table, a desk. It looks AWFUL! XD
I usually give my villagers random fish super quickly since I don't care what their house looks like, however at one point every piece of furniture Apple has was fish ;-;
I do this whenever I come across items which I feel fit the theme for one of my villagers' houses. For example, whenever I end up with Cabin items, I give them to Erik. I've started being a little bit more careful with the items I let them buy in Re-Tail and what I give them since a lot of their houses look like nonsense right now, haha.
I don't really mind what they have in their house, but if they request furniture, I usually give them something that will look nice in their home. If they invite me over, I buy the ugly furniture from out of their room.
I seem to yo-yo in trying to help my villagers. A week ago I kept giving Sly plants, Winnie and Bruce food items and Zell fancy-ish stuff to match what they were seemingly going for. But I've given up again now as they kept replacing the things I wanted them to keep.
I've taken to ordering a ton of polka bits from Nooklings remaking them all randomly and selling them to villagers to see how that goes. They can all live in a wildly colourful polka-dot land.
I randomly sent Egbert some items not knowing at all what his interior looked like before, considering he came form someone else's town...and he decorated in an AMAZING way! He put the items in fabulous spots and now his room is like VIP Colorful with a dash of Sci-Fi!
Gayle's house kind of turned into a Ranch House with western touches. I really want her to go back to the Lovely Series, and I want Aurora to have the Ice Series when it comes around.
I'm trying to keep Olivia in her regal theme, and Goldie with her modern wood. That's about all I do, try to get animals one set of furniture, lol. I'd like to replace Bonbon's place with more Patchwork if I could get more than 3 pieces!
I've been trying to make Marshal's house less sloppy and more modern ( gave him a computer desk and a stereo or something ). I just end up buying all their random shirts that are in their house when I go over, though.
Not in terms for redecorating their house, but I try to send my villagers shirts to wear...but they just put it in their house, which it also kinda looks good in.

haha I didn't know so many other people did it,but Kyle puts totally out of place furniture in his already awesome rockstar house! He literally put a pink cushioned stool next to his super cool stuff.
