Something that has always bothered me about Nintendo and video game series' in general is how they transition from one instalment to another, and how the previous ones are typically left to rot. This has motivated me to switch from mainstream console games to indie computer games, with communities that live indefinitely.

With the Animal Crossing community, I think it's pretty obvious how the transitional process works. City Folk (or Let's Go to the City, as it's called where I am) gets released and it's super popular and everybody's playing it. Then, New Leaf is released and everybody switches to that. People still played City Folk, though, and the popularity switching from that game to New Leaf is perfectly natural and expected, but then Nintendo closed the Wi-Fi down for it, and of course that obliterated almost all of the regular players at the time.

Go to any of the boards on this forum for previous Animal Crossing instalments and you'll notice a huge difference in the amount of threads made in relation to it. The reason, of course, is the transition from the first game to Wild World, from Wild World to City Folk, from City Folk to New Leaf. You get the idea.

Now, though Nintendo did have the ability to recreate the Wi-Fi network for their older games, a marketing strategy no less was to simply direct those players to newer instalments of the game, increasing the popularity of their newer consoles (especially with how much of a commercial failure the Wii U was turning out to be, which I personally don't understand because I really enjoy the Wii U as a console) and moving forward as a company.

The sad thing is that the same thing will no doubt happen to New Leaf, along with every other future Animal Crossing instalment. This same pattern can be applied to the Pok?mon series, which is perhaps even sadder, considering how connective each game is, with the ability to trade and all that.

So, that's my opinion on it at all. What do you lot think?

Well I had my DS for a long time. I plan to have my XL for a long time. So, I'll be here for a long time and hopefully others still will be too.

If they close wifi for this, though, I'll just be done really.

I wouldn't compare it to Pok?mon at all. I still have my original Blaziken from Sapphire version. The game doesn't die in that case, it just... migrates, I guess.

And yeah, I figure New Leaf will die when the next Animal Crossing is released. If it's a console version, then the handheld New Leaf may last a long time after though. I personally think Animal Crossing works waaaaay better on a handheld than a home console. It's the sort of game you play for 20 minutes a day, and you can take it on vacation or whatever.

The change from Wild World to New Leaf (to stay on one console) was pretty huge. Way better graphics and so many new things.
I don't think that the change from New Leaf to the next DS game will be as huge. The graphics can't get much better for a DS and all possible changes seem smaller than from WW to NL.
New Leaf will live on for quite a while in my opinion. I lost interest in WW after about 1 year because everything that I enjoyed in the game I already completed and the rest wasn't avaiable to me. Now I've played NL for over 2 years and I still have so much more to do.
I don't think I would buy the next handheld Animal Crossing, everything looks already amazing in New Leaf and it would take a lot more (more that isn't possible) for me to abandon this DS AC for another one.

I honestly think that New Leaf will die when they release another handheld AC game that provides the "full" AC experience - ie, not Happy Home Designer or Amibo Festival, but a true AC game. The stationary consoles are okay (and my first AC game was the original on Gamecube), but I think where AC shines is on the handhelds, thus the popularity of WW and NL.

I think once Nintendo releases a next gen handheld that is a true successor to the 3DS, along with a full Animal Crossing game, you'll see New Leaf die. Honestly, the ONLY game I play on 3DS is Animal Crossing - I'm a PC gamer otherwise.

I don't have a speculative answer, but I was thinking about this recently--how much time do we have left to visit each other's dream suite towns (my favorite thing to do in ACNL) or to trade items, host AC proms, etc.? :( I will be open to trying any new AC game that comes out, but I don't see how it ACNL could be improved upon, and so many people have spent months or several years perfecting their towns. It will be so sad when the Wi-Fi for it goes away for good. This prospect is especially sad to me for ACNL, as I rarely visited with anyone in Wild World, and the Dream Suite didn't exist then. In Population: Growing, I don't think I even knew that visiting was an option, though I had the cable to visit the private island. City Folk I only played a handful of times, so I wasn't personally affected when the Wi-Fi for it went away. But for ACNL, it will be like mourning lost friends.

As far as just plain popularity, I agree with what some others have said; ACNL is such an outstanding game that it would take a real miracle of a new handheld version to knock it off its throne, and an even more outstanding version on console to do the same.

I don't think it'll die, really. Some still play the old games. Some just have more interest in the newest game in the series currently. New Leaf is, in my opinion, the best in the series, so I'll be playing it for a long time.

Mm, my answer is uncertain but from the way the history of animal crossing games have been I don't always think that each time will be the same as it was before. The new animal crossing game festival that's coming out on Wii U doesn't seem like the regular animal crossing games, but honestly more like mario party and depending on if people really like this game a lot or not they would most likely continue with animal crossing new leaf or play any previous animal crossing games. I think animal crossing new leaf has been doing really great since it first released 2011-2012 or 2012 2013? my bad, but I mean if a game is really great I would highly doubt it would 'die' out fast or be quickly abondoned.

I don't think it will die anytime soon, sure it "might" in say a year or so but it is such speculation that you never what they are planning to do. One can only hope that they keep the series on a hand held device. At least I hope they will.

The game itself won't die for some people. Wild World is 10 years old and I'm playing again. Even if I take a break from New Leaf, I'll be back. These are the only video games I play, after all. I know they might eventually cut the Wi-Fi and that will really suck, but it won't make me stop playing.

Im pretty sure New Leaf will die out once the wii u one comes out ;-;. I hate wii u because I have no tvs that are meant for playing on :c.

My thought is, as long as Nintendo continues to make backward compatible hand held consoles then ACNL can live on. :D

I've been wondering myself when the forum will temporarily 'die' as the wi-fi is shut off for New Leaf. Personally, it just upsets me how they do that with all of the games, especially Pokemon, considering how connected they are to each other. Animal Crossing I totally understand, since once you've finished your town a trillion times, done everything you can, discovered all the glitches and cool things yourself, and established yourself on a forum, it slowly gets dull. But with Pokemon? It just saddens me. I'm very happy with how Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow are getting released into the nintendo eshop next year for the 3DS, but still.

In all reality we have to look at how the company considers the games: a means of profit. A paycheck. Once the game has a ton of copies sold, and they've made a truckload of $$$, the general audience won't be buying anymore. Therefore, since they can't easily sell massive DLC updates for each and every game, they make a new version. It's easier for them (since lots and lots of DLC on smaller consoles is very hard), earns them more money, and lets the franchise live on. So in reality you can't expect games like AC or Pokemon to live on forever, but instead the idea of them will; we'll always have new versions to look forward to. Games like Minecraft or World of Warcraft are PC or online games, so they can easily be updated (even Minecraft for XBOX 360 will live on longer than any Pokemon/AC game, since it's just one of those games, plus it's updated all the time with new features anyways, which makes it live on longer), and so they tend to never die, or die as quick at least.

TL;DR: As long as DLC, big updates, or any new downloadable features are in the making for a game, that game will continue and live on, since its audience will have a reason to keep playing and not buy a newer game or a different one. It's just the nature of the beast.

Once the new Animal Crossing game comes out, people will mostly be playing that one and if it's better than New Leaf, why wouldn't they?

It's sad but it's just how it is. I'm sure there will be some people still playing New Leaf but I know a lot of people will move onto the next game. Doesn't mean you can't continue to play New Leaf.

I think it will depend on whether the next AC game is released for console or handheld, because let's face it: this is the type of game that functions best on handheld.

I've been playing daily since June of 2013, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

i agree with everyone here that says AC is better on a handheld; for me there's no doubt about that. i never played any of the console versions, but even if i did, this is just a game that's made for a handheld.
i think that once a new, full AC game comes out, some people are inevitably going to drop NL and move on, but that makes sense. in my opinion, NL is a close-to-perfect game itself, so the new one has to be even better, and that's definitely motivation for me to want it. but again, that's only if it's better and doesn't end up going backwards, like the sims did. but i have lots of faith in nintendo and i doubt that will happen.
i also feel like NL doesn't necessarily need improvements as much as just new stuff added to it; bigger maps, better home design (like in HHD), expanding on villager personalities some more, more shops...things like that. the big parts of the game are pretty flawless, but i'd still be more than willing the new game for all of the new stuff over a graphics update.
regardless, the way nintendo shuts down the servers for their old games is pretty lame. i understand their reasoning, but it's still pretty unfair to people who still love the older games. even if the next full installment is 10x better than NL, odds are i'm still going to want to keep playing my old game at least for a little while. cutting the wifi kills a lot of the fun of it.
