When kindness just backfires... (FOUND A FIX!)

So sorry this happened to you Nefarious! I'm really picky about what my villagers wear and that would have devastated me.

That's a really good trick, and I think you had the right to report it. If Nintendo disagrees, then they should fix the game mechanic. Thanks for sharing with the community!

Could had been worst. They could had displayed one of those bikini customs. At least you found a fix to it, but as far as customs go it's not a bad one to be forced on.

There was an easy fix to this for NL by making all the customs umbrellas in the Able's. Hopefully they can somehow make an update for it to be locked from villager use unless you OK it.

I'm so glad you found a solution! I wonder if that would work in my shop, although I'd probably have to get someone else to report it, since I don't think you can self-own?

If you don't mind getting reported it is worth a try to get someone to report the design on your island. If that doesn't work out, maybe someone with a second island and an extra Nintendo Online account wouldn't mind helping you out. Display a random design they made on that account and you report it after. It sucks to back up their report line, but this seems to be the only way to reset it.

That's definitely true, and probably why I felt bad about being upset about it and reporting it. With the way how displaying designs work and not being able to remove them from villager's wardrobe permanently in NH, it kind of lessen the enjoyment of having certain villagers for me.

Also, didn't know about the umbrella trick for NL. I regret displaying some tops in that game. Next time I boot it up, I'll for sure replace them with umbrellas. Thanks for the info!

don’t feel bad about reporting it; while i don’t believe there was any malicious intent behind it, someone still displayed one of their designs without permission and that’s not fair to you. i’m sorry that happened but i’m glad you were able to find a fix! c’:

Wow! It never crossed my mind that someone would be able to put their designs up in my shop without my permission, crazy! Thanks for the heads up though, luckily I don’t really have visitors outside of this forum and family. Glad you found a fix, hopefully it doesn’t happen to you again! I wish there was a way to override this without having to report it every time, maybe if it happens enough Nintendo will do something about it.

This feature honestly doesn't make sense to me. They went out of their way to restrict tool usage on other islands because they understood people get upset if others mess with their island, but then they let them put up designs that pretty much prevent ALL your villagers from wearing normal clothes forever? Why?

I am so pleased you managed to get this sorted. You have been so incredibly kind and generous. I can’t understand why anyone would think it’s an ok thing to do on someone’s island.

On a side note I didn’t appreciate how adorable Felicity actually is 😍

But that is just untrue. Custom designs do not prevent your villagers from wearing normal clothes forever. I have a few custom designs in my shop and my villagers do not wear them very often. They hardly wear them at all!

I do understand why it would be annoying to find out that somebody did that as a surprise. Especially if they aren't a close friend and just an internet stranger.

Big agree there. It doesn't make sense to not lock this feature behind "best friend"-status. This is just asking for trouble, especially when the report-system isn't working properly.

I remember over on reddit someone who had opened up for turnips ended up having offensive patterns put in their shop without their knowledge

They did figure out who it was though

wow I didn’t realize other people can post their designs in your shop...that’s so uncool that this person would do it without your permission so yeah definitely don’t feel bad! Hopefully Nintendo can patch in something to limit this from happening

it really sucks that you can’t get your villagers to stop wearing custom designs esp when things like this happen 😔

I don't know if it was possible to report custom clothes back in New Leaf, but I've had someone do this to me in New Leaf. It's very upsetting. I believe most people these days lack manners.

I thought that complaining to Isabella about what the villager is wearing will stop them wearing custom designs?

To me doing anything on someone else's island without permission is a big no-no! I'm so sorry that happened to you, how stressful. I'm glad you were able to sort it out though. Please don't feel bad about reporting the designs, they should of known better to hang them without having permission first and you tried all other options to fix the problem. :)

This is why I watch anyone who comes to my island like a hawk. 🧐

I can confirm that it does not remove custom designs either. I've complained about Eugene wearing it a few times already and I still see him wearing it sometimes. 😔

Some villagers wear it more often than others. I don't know what determines it, but I have seen Eugene wear it more often than Felicity and Pecan. I don't give my villagers many clothing pieces. Eugene has only his original Biker Jacket and Pecan her original Milkmaid Dress. Felicity on the other hand does have a single Clover Dress in her lineup. So they will change into the custom design more often than a villager with 7+ tops.

Sorry that happened!

People even from here have done worse.

You just have to be careful.

I had someone not show up for a trade for a villager.
I got a random move in that wrecked my town, and I had already paid them and ended up with nothing.

They got away with it too.

I also had someone dump a load of golden tools outside my airtport when I specifically told them I didn't want them.

They dumped the tools, I picked them up to throw them away, and got the achievement for golden tools.

They ruined it for me.

I'm not an ass so I didn't leave negative feedback.

I had a friend over to report my transparent design. It worked and the original is back, so even if several changes have been made, it can be fixed.

the same thing happened to me with the gold watering can. I decided to fix it by making my island 5 stars that day so the date on the stamp would still match. I had to put random furniture everywhere to force the star rating up

I'm sorry you had to go through those experiences. I know I'd be really ticked off if someone ruined my achievements like that, especially when you decline their offer already. It's part of the gameplay so it's important for many to complete them on their own if they so wish.
If you were completely upfront and clear to them and they still went against your wishes, I'd think you'd be justified to at least give them a neutral review if not a negative one.
