When is a good time to take hiatuses with ACNL?

you should research some of the threads here about keeping villagfers, and time travelling. If you didn't already know this-- its widely held that when you receive a villager move-out ping that you deny, you can save and quit and are then free to time travel forward as far as you wish the next time you play and nobody will have moved out. Ive used this method successfully to take short breaks (like 2 weeks max), but others here swear by this system for taking months and months off from the game when they need to do so. It is also recommended that you enact the Beautiful Town ordinance before lengthy hiatus )i believe it takes an extra day to go into effect). good luck!

Vertigo -I'm in UK so schooling different, well different names for things, but it sounds as if you are taking the equivalent of our 'A' levels at college combining with a job A job gives you valuable work experience, so it all sounds great to me.
A lot of students do this in the UK. College will probably teach in a different way to school, students tend to be more grown up - all the very best to you - it sounds great.

To acnl - yes you can do as King Dad describes, a lot of players do & it works well.

There is another way, which is what I do - I freeze time using the 3ds clock to change time. You can use Isabelle at front screen, tho then the system & game times will be different.
I make a note of when I save and then move the time back to sometime after that last save and play again.
The game does not see it as TT, it thinks you are playing daily. In real time that gap may be anything from a few mins to years.

It means you probably play a lot more slowly and be in the past - I am, but there are no ingame disadvantages. You can still sell turnips in other towns set on different dates etc.
It frees the game up completely, you play when you can for a bit of relaxation.

My town is almost a year old and it's pretty much finished. After Easter or maybe April Fool's Day, I might take a couple of months off. Of course, I'll wait until after someone pings to move, so there will be no unhappy surprises when I return. In the meantime, it will give me more time to play in my other towns, which need a lot of work. I think you just know when you need a break and the reasons vary for everyone.

I've taken a lot of AC:NL hiatuses, and I think the easiest time is right after summer ends.

Through the course of this year I've been on hiatus from September to November and Mid January to now (Hiatus being, not playing for a while, maybe once or twice a month)

Summer is only a couple months away so I might get back into it real soon, but once you put the 3ds down for a couple days, it will feel a lot easier to stay off animal crossing

so basically anytime that isn't Winter and Summer

As others have said, there are ways of preserving your town so you can take longer hiatuses without coming back and finding everything changed or different: beautiful town ordinance, the villager-ping trick, etc. Generally though, I always take a mini hiatus anytime my town is giving me grief or I'm having issues. Like when an uggo smashed one of my nice areas I was going to landscape, I went on a 6 month hiatus. If you're struggling with your town or are frustrated, take a week off. When you take a really long hiatus and come back, you feel so refreshed, and it's like starting a new town: you don't remember what you had and didn't have, so everything is a surprise. It gives you a new perspective to see how you want your town to grow and develop.

You should definitely start time traveling, if you're worried about losing villagers. If you open your activity log, you can see when the last time you played was and time travel back to that day so there's no risk of losing anyone. You could also write down the last day in your game notes (yellow pencil icon at the top of the 3DS touch screen). I sometimes go months without playing, especially when I'm busy with real life using this method. Remember getting your life together is more important than a game. If video games are part of the reason you failed, you might want to wean yourself off until you get back on your feet. I know games can be comforting but you can also foster a dependency on them which isn't healthy. You're not pathetic for failing! Everyone lives their lives at a different pace and getting a GED or graduating later than your peers isn't the end of the world. There are plenty of people who continue education despite being older than the other students, like we had a middle-aged man working on his undergrad at my uni. As long as you keep working towards your goal, you're not failing, you're making progress. Good luck with your course and finding a job!

It's completely fine if you want to take hiatuses, it happens to the best of us. :) Also, here's a tip when you take your hiatus you should write down the date you stopped playing, so when you return all you have to do is change your 3DS clock to that time and nobody will have moved out or nothing will change within the town as it'll be set on the day you stopped playing, so you won't lose any dreamies. :)

If you are going to take a long break it is best to try and find a moving villager then don't let them move I hear that if you don't let them move no moving villager will move out if you don't play the game for a long time I never tried this but if you don't like it you can write the last time you played the game and TT to that date. Next if you have lots of flowers turn on beautiful town your flowers will not die. And you won't have that many weed when you load up the game.

hey dont feel so bad! i know somebody that had to go to an alternative school and eventually got his ged. school isn't for everybody and its especially worse if you have learning disorders or a personality disorder and trouble at home. high school isn't the end all be all of your life and its just not for everyone! its gotta be tough and i just hope your self-esteem isnt too low bc of this..dont let it dictate your future.

as far as acnl... take a break when you get bored and you want to move on to other interests. you cant be productive 24 hrs a day, so whether you play a game, read a book or watch a show you need leisure time. if you feel its time to take a break and explore other things then you probably should. its good to be a well-rounded person with diverse interests, i think. you'll be much happier and able to deal with things in the long run.

Alrighty, I'll take all of your advice, you guys. Thank you so much!

Thank you all so much for your advice. I really wish I could've replied to all of you sooner, but life has been hectic lately. I will definitely take all of this advice onto board, though, because I really do appreciate it very much. It means a lot to me. c:
