What's with all the adoration for Raymond?

I love cats. Between my home and two farms, I have over 50 cats at one time. Yes, they were all cared for.

My favorite cats are black cats, he is dark gray so close enough? (Kikis nose situation bothers me...)

He is a grumpy cat!!!!!!! My absolute fave. My irl cat (not the one in my profile pic, thats a different one =3) is a large fluffy black cat who has a flat head. Thanks to that (and his huge eyes!) he always either looks mad or upset 99.9% of the time due to his ear placement. Really he is very happy and sweet after I got his health in order... he was very sick when I got him from a rescue. Anyways, thanks to his huge (almost glowing...) eyes and distressed look, he always gets so much attention at the vet office from workers and lil old ladies who worry for the baby.
Grumpy cats are such my thing that Kabuki will FOREVER be my all time fave villager.

Also, he is business-y which i find adorable in of itself. Sort of when a little kid plays boss? Its adorable, "oh, yes, sweeite. You are in charge. ^.~" He looks so serious that its cute.

On a more personal note that I found out a little bit after I had really wanted him anyways that made me want him even more, his birthday is my mom's death day... I'd really enjoy being able to celebrate life in my favorite escapism platform on the day... once i get him I fully plan on decorating his yard with white cosmos, which is the closest to daisies in game... my moms fave flower.
My dream is to have an entire kitty island. That probably means I need Raymond. Sigh.

I mean I felt the same way when Marshall came out in NL. They're all the same pretty much. Heck maybe a bit more bland in NH now that personality/dialogue has been dialed back. If each animal actually had a set backstory and the such that was unique to them I could see where all the love goes for any top tier villager, but to me they're just one of the eight personalities.

I think a big part of this is also that there aren't a lot of cute smug villager (same with Marshal). And he's the first smug cat villager.

Maybe because AC has a huge weeb fanbase and Smugs are the only personalities that are flirtatious and some people are feeling needy for that kind of attention, so why not get it from a villager who ticks so many of the boxes on the weeb chart (heterochromia, cat boy, maid dress meme)? Or is the horrible fan fiction lying to me?

I don't see the fuss either, tbh.
Dude, the flirtiness of smugs is why I hate them.
As someone who worked as a waitress for a number of years, so much of their dialog reminded me of the creepy old men who would come in to harass the young (like 17yr olds...) women. It waa disgusting things customers were allowed to get away with.
I just see Julian as a fabulously gay diva which is why the dialog never bothered me with him... and why I would only accept him as my smug in new leaf. >.>

Hey, man, yeah, it's fine to like him. I'm just saying that he makes me uncomfortable and I wonder why others are drawn to him.
Didn't mean to project any hate towards those that do do. You like who you like. I just want to know why.

It's more like, why does anyone have to justify why they like a certain character? They simply do for their own reasons. I'm just more sick and tired of people constantly making threads saying that you need to justify why you like a character. For example, I dislike Tangy because I don't like her design and her holes terrify me, but there aren't a million threads out there of me or other people being like "I dislike Tangy and can't understand her appeal, so you have to show me some justification." Why can't you just accept that other people like him for their own reasons and you can not like him for your own reasons.

tbh i don't really like popular villagers and i recently found out about the maid outfit thing so that's kinda put me off
but he is still pretty funny, the smug dialogue always makes me laugh

Ah...right. I should have thought that people would have already asked this question. My bad for not looking beforehand.
definitely didn't mean anything by it, my bad for sounding some type of way! it was more of a comment about how even questions about raymond sort of add to the hype of him somehow.. lol
but yep there was a great thread recently on the pricing of raymond and can find a lot of good opinions in there 👍 that being said, there always seems to be more to say, so if people keep responding to threads like these i can't see why they shouldn't be made

If Tangy was the #1 top tier villager, she would be getting a lot of hate threads. That's kind of the difference. You still do get the occasional post or someone mentioning why they don't like her.

People hating on Raymond are also doing it because of the community that slobbered greedily all over him. Like that one girl who made that guy pay a ton of NMT 'cause Raymond was in boxes' but he wasn't in boxes or moving at all. They just pulled one over on them. 8000 NMT to have Raymond breath on you. Those kind of comments get on peoples nerves. It's more the toxic community that took things too far rather than the cat himself.

I agree, and I would be saying the exact same thing I am saying now if it was any villager out there and not just Raymond specifically. In my personal experience, I see a lot more anti-Raymond haters than I do super stan-Raymond lovers. And I agree that those people who are scamming like that for Raymond are not to be tolerated and should be banned and shamed from the community because that is not what it is about. But I feel that because of the constant negativity behind Raymond, it makes it harder for people who genuinely like him for whatever their own reason to be okay with it. I have seen lots of posts (not here thank god) of people who say they like Raymond and to be swarmed with anti-Raymond haters saying they hate him and that you're wrong for liking him. I just feel that constant posts like these breed the constant negativity and hate, when we can all just agree that everyone has their own preferences for their villagers, and no one needs to justify their reasons for them.

I don't remember the other games having as much toxicity as I am seeing now. Maybe it's because I never really followed the community until the games were late in their life, but I feel like the Covid-19 shutdown brought an influx of undesirable people. Like I remember TTing threads being here or there, but never with so much volume as I am seeing currently.

People were fine with TTers and people were fine with those who preferred to play without TT.

I didn't think asking for someone to tell me why they like a character was a bad thing (maybe I came off too harsh in my starting post?). I mean, I'm sure I like characters that others dont and if someone told me that they disliked a character for some reason and asked me why I thought that character was likable I wouldn't think it was an attack on what I like, I would just think think that they didn't see what I see. Which is okay. Actually, I think justifying why you like or dislike a character is a good thing, even a conversation starter. It's a way to have someone see your side. Maybe even convince them. From what I can see with how you speak of the question when involving Tangy, it is not the question it's self, but the constant repeating of the question that seems to be grating on your nerves. And, for that, I'm sorry. What I'm not sorry for, is asking for other people's opinions and wanting to understand their reasoning. I like hearing opinions. They sometimes open my eyes.

This forum eats, sleeps and breathes tier lists. Popularity is the central (and yes, tiresome) preoccupation of the general discussion forum and with that comes questions of why a given villager is popular or unpopular. Asking why someone is popular is not the same as demanding justification for liking that someone. As evidenced by this thread, lots of people, both fans and non-fans alike, have theories about his popularity and I have enjoyed reading them!

He is the first smug cat villager, villager with 2 eye colors, I remember seeing him on a switch case before the game came out and I wanted him until he became my first camper. That time, I didn’t know he became overrated, but it was because of the maid dress on social media.

My dream is to have an entire kitty island. That probably means I need Raymond. Sigh.
If its all cats and you want one of every personality... looks like you'll have to have Raymond.
He is the only smug cat. =/

Which an all cat island was very popular in newleaf time as well. I remember people complaining that they had to get x smug cuz no smug cats. (Usually they tried for msrshal since he was the most popular of the time)

I like raymond because his coloration + him being a smug reminds me of my own cat...

He also looks like a cat version of this guy:

Once he moves in proper into my island I'm putting an OSHA sign outside his house...

You know, I keep hearing about him in a maid dress. I should probably look that up and see why it's stuck with people.

I think it is because there has been a barrage of posts about the Raymond topic specifically, that it automatically facilitates negativity? Not sure if that makes sense. There was also a problematic user on this forum who started a thread about not liking raymond just to be a troll, which I think also generates the general negativity on the subject of why/why not like raymond specifically. I personally don't think you have anything to apologize for if you genuinely wanted to see other people's opinions/understanding.

My lazies are way more flirty with me than my smug villagers! All "You look good in anything" and "Here's a gift. I hope I made you happy." Ozzie even told me once, while blushing, that it was the second time he saw me that day because the first was in my dreams. xD

To me it's just the rarity, seeing there is no amiibo yet. I won't actively look for him, but will surely take him if I ever come across him :)
