What's with all the adoration for Raymond?

I just can't see why he's so liked.
The vibe that he gives off is so unpleasant to me. He just looks so prissy and conceited. Which, yeah, I guess fits his smug nature seriously well. Maybe I am just reading too much into the cover, but he doesn't seem like he'd be all that swell of a person. If you like him, can you tell me why? What draws you to him?

smug has always been my favourite personality and cats have always been my favourite species in the game so those are the main reasons i love him
and he is just soooo cute imo with his different eyes and his little suit it's adorable ♡♡♡♡♡

I think a huge factor is the small number of new villagers introduced with New Horizons. Bar one or two, the vast majority of them are considered 'top tier' or 'desirable' by the community.

That's notwithstanding the fact that they are all quite attractively designed and fill some more difficult to fill personalities (e.g. Uchi)

I am unsure of the hype around Raymond as well, but I will find out soon enough. He just moved onto my island today (in boxes) and I will be able to interact with him tomorrow. I am curious to see if I will love him as much as other people. I have to admit though, I lowkey regret picking him over kiki (who appeared on the mystery islands before him)/ settling for him instead of searching for my dreamie Rudy so I hope I like him lolol...

I think the office cat persona is a cute trope, but that's where it ends for me. I guess his popularity is also derived from the fact he does not have an amiibo yet, much like Audie, Sherb and Dom.

I like his color scheme and frown. It matches my town quite nicely. Eventually I’d love to have him on my island. I’m not really actively seeking him though. If he magically appears in my campsite that would be nice. Other than that, I’m too lazy to go island hopping and too cheap to buy him.

I originally disliked his looks, but I got to really like his personality. I don't know if it's all the hype that influenced me but I really enjoy his dialogues! Makes me smile and laugh and I just like it. I have another smug that I really wanted on my island and we didn't quite connect as much.

See. This is what I was wondering. I was wondering if he was one of those that some people clicked with dialog wise. Like you have to meet him, talk with him, be one on one with him to really see him shine.

I like Raymond for what he is: A cat and being a good friend. I'm still a little foggy on why he is well liked, but I'm sure one of the reasons is because he wore a maid dress one time and people lost their marbles. I mean, other villagers can do that too, especially in Photopia.

The only thing that weird me out though is his eyes. Give him a monocle and you understand what I mean. Now if you excuse me, I'll run away before diehard Raymond fans chase me down with pitchforks and get sacrificed.

Maybe because AC has a huge weeb fanbase and Smugs are the only personalities that are flirtatious and some people are feeling needy for that kind of attention, so why not get it from a villager who ticks so many of the boxes on the weeb chart (heterochromia, cat boy, maid dress meme)? So smugs are flirtatious? Well, I guess I might have to rethink Shep...ha, nah, him being flirtatious still works with how I thought of him. Actually, that make's his nonchalant outlook work even more. Nice.
Being flirtatious actually makes Raymond more uncomfortable for me. And, yet, this makes Shep even cooler. That's probably not right.

Yup. smugs are flirtatious and thanks to the improved dialogue in NH, they don't just say that you're looking as cool as a fair number of cucumbers.

I agree that I'm no die hard Raymond fan but I like him well enough. I like cats a lot, I have two in real life. Heterochromia is neat, his overall color pallette is nice imo, and the smug personality is a fun one for me. I also like that he dresses well lol. Also cat fangs are cute but there are other cat villagers who have little teeths.
