What's the deal with smugs?

I always get scared when a smug pings me. Not because they might be thinking on moving, but because they might ask me for something i need/want in exchange for a poem, then a crappy item. And if you say no, they get walk around depressed.

I keep saying yes to Eugene now because he always makes me feel bad, ugghhh.
i still love him tho

It makes me feel very bad because I NEVER buy what they try to sell me, and rarely sell them what they want to buy from me. So to see him get all depressed over his poetry is not only strange and slightly unsettling, it's also just kinda sad. I just wanna hug him :c

It seems to be a callback to WW, but... Then they just didn't add any others in. That might be why it seems weird. :| GG, Nintendo.

Ed, my smug villager, has done this only once before. Usually I compliment him, but just once it really hurt his pride, lmao.

It can be irritating, but I really do think it was sort of a callback as to how WW was and how they used to fluctuate through emotions FAR more often. It was too much in WW, and now they just don't at all in NL. I'm not sure why they added ONE bit of dialogue that triggers it, however, in one personality. :/ It's sort of odd.

smugs are scammers. i've had them try to sell things to me where they say "oh at the train station it'll cost you 1,856bells but for you i'll sell it for 2,492bells." they sell paintings for 7k too...you'd think for a painting that expensive it'd be real but nope! i've gotten fake ones i paid 7k+ for.

Actually that's never happened to me before and I've got 2 Smugs now, at first Lionel sold me a few fake paintings but then they became consistently legit and today Marshal sold me a fake one...great way to start the friendship dude...

Any villager who walks around depressed after you deny him/her of something means you have a low friendship with that villager. It isn't the matter of personality. It only means you need to befriend that villager more.
