What's considered a "tree"?

I finally hit the "too many trees" and got bumped down to 4-star again. Can I say how asinine the statement "too rural" is? This game is called Animal Forest.

Anyways, has it been confirmed what is considered a tree? I figure hardwood, cedar, fruit and palm are. The question is do bamboo, shrubs, tree stumps, saplings and stunted growth trees count in this? With those with more natural/forest islands, how have you gone about staying in the 5-star range, or have you just thrown it in the wind and stuck to 4-stars?
I think it’s trees, bamboo and shrubs. Everything else is fine, I think.

If you’ve ever seen me talk about my island you’ll know that it’s supposed an overgrown nightmare that actively traps those who enter it...so yea I’m at 4 stars perpetually. I do think I’ll thin ‘em in May, though, to maximize rare mushrooms

Not to highjack your thread but you said you're buying Lily of the Valley's from people without a 5 star island. Do they die if planted on an island that isn't 5 stars like they did in NL?
Wait, did this actually happen in New Leaf? I've never had a perfect town and I planted a few... They're still there.

5 stars also positively impacts the odds of rare mushrooms growing on your island next month

Thanks for sharing this! I already decided not to use my island as one gigantic warehouse of random stuff. I guess it's worth keeping that rating then. I also want more lily of valley plants! :) I am trying to amass a lot of them.
