I watched the show and collected the cards pretty much as soon as it hit the USA, but I didn't own any games until 3rd gen. Ruby was my first game, and I've still got my Pokemon from it sitting on my copy of Platinum. Blaziken 4 Life.
I actually remember seeing Red and Blue in stores before the series aired over here and I didn't know what it was. It was only when Pokemon 'blew up' though and everybody went crazy for it that my Dad bought me both of them because nobody really knew what the differences between them were then, so he played it safe.
I remember Yellow being released and the fact that Pikachu followed you like on TV being the greatest thing ever...Ahhh...We had such simple pleasures.
Despite that, I'm not a genwunner. I think it's arguably the worst game in the series outside of being the original. It just hasn't aged very well. I have fond memories of it though.
Kids these days don't know the joys of the almighty pokegods Pikablu and Bruno!!!!
Gen 2. I remember the day my cousin gave me the game (I was only like 6 or 7??) I was really confused but I fell in love. It's still my favorite gen to date
I was a fan since first gen (impossible not to be aware of Pok?mon's exist at that time in NA lmao) but didn't have a game until 2nd gen, so my first game was Silver. :')
There's two answers, I went with the former of the two.
The first explanation was that I played was gen4, a Pok?mon Diamond game. However, and I remember this exactly, whenever I saw that kid who said "if you're late to the lake, you owe me P[okedollar]1,000,000!" and that got me scared so I stopped playing it. I dug up the game several years later, and the file on it had a grand total of 9 minutes, without even a starter to my character's name.
The second time I picked up a new Pokemon game was BW, about 1.5 years after its release. This was my first actual game that I went through, making it to the end credits (avoiding spoilers, but tbh Nintendo logic reveals it all right in front of you if you think about it, see spoiler at bottom if you don't get this), and is, essentially, the first gen that I got to know and get accustomed to Pokemon with.
At the end of the game you find out that Team Plasma was not trying to free Pokemon. However this is obviously not the case, as people from N to the grunts use a variety of Pok?mon to fight the protagonist. If Plasma was trying so hard to free Pokemon, why would they capture pokemon to reinforce their mission? Either they're huge hypocrites or the entire operation was a trick. And it oh-so-obv was the latter.
started with Pokemon Yellow. got my brother's Game Boy Pocket with that game in it as a Christmas present.(whooooooo hand-me-down gifts) he was mad when I started a new game on it because he had all the Pokemon in the game. but what else was I gonna do? sheesh. :y
Generation 1, I started with Blue. I still remember my first Pok?mon, Squirtle. Which became an awesome overpowered Blastoise. Which is weird because the Bulbasaur evolution line is my favourite of all the starters now. (Ignoring Yellow, because Raichu is my all time favourite Pok?mon. It's not like Pikachu can evolve in that game anyway.)
I started with Blue. I remember asking my grandma for Red (because of charizard) but she got me Blue cause she couldn't find the "dragon one" It worked out in my favor because Blue had caterpie and at the time I was really into caterpillars for some reason.
