What Villagers Do/Don't Display In Their Houses

This is a thread about the things villagers do or don't display on their houses. If you can confirm some of the stuff that I'm unsure about that would be great, or if you have any other things to add to the list.

DO:

• Regular furniture (both standard and custom, as long as you don't use custom patterns)
• Bugs and fish
• Clothing
• Music boxes (I've tried this one myself and it works but it's never been at the first try)
• Flowers
• KK Songs that you send them will be played on their music player
• Fossils
• Wall objects (shelves, paintings)
• Hats and accessories (thanks Nunnafinga)
• KK Songs as decoration
• Shells (thanks Nunnafinga)

DON'T:

• Fruit
• Medicine
• Coffee beans
• Wallpaper and flooring (I've heard that they don't and it's also been my experience, but I've heard a few people say they do. I'm putting it under "don't" until anyone can prove otherwise).
• Ore (thanks lencurryboy)

I believe Poncho has KK Ska up as a decoration, propped up on one of his coffee tables... its the bug hunt today in my town so if I manage to snap a pic inside I may upload it... I think it's him who has it lol!

Villagers do display hats.Jambette had a jockey's helmet on display when I adopted her as can be seen in this screenshot.

Things can be hung on the wall. I gave Kitt a Tapestry and she hung it on the wall.

I gave Bruce a robo clock and he put it up. Is that part of what you're referring to with wall objects?

I'm almost certain I've had villagers display shells before. I'm no help w/anything else on this list though.

Are you talking about the shells you can pick up from the beach? Mine never display them and I'd assume they're in the same category as things like ore or fruit. I'll move it to the "unsure" list.

They can also buy/display customized furniture, provided a pattern is not used in the upholstering (the ones that give you a gold as opposed to a red leaf)

Flowers rare? I've sent all of my villagers letters with colour matching roses in them and all of the villagers displayed them the next day. It's very common!

I know about custom furniture, I just figured it would work being included in "furniture" by default... maybe I should edit my post to make it more accurate to everyone.

Yeah, that's the issue with the shells thing... hopefully someone can give us some proof or experience. Have you tried it (even if you don't have proof)?

Sorry, that was meant to reflect my experience with sending my villagers flowers... I send them flowers almost every time I send them letters and they don't display even half of the ones I send them. I'd never seen anyone mention it so I assumed it wasn't common. I'll change that to make it more accurate.

No, just when I send letters and don't have anything else to attach. I also vary the flowers. I've never had villagers ignore things that I send over and over, either. I think it's kind of random what they end up displaying in their house or not.

I've never tried it with flowers but in my experience if you send one round of oranges they'll reply happily, if you send another round you get ignored - but if I send oranges and then cherries I will get two lots of replies. Maybe it's the same thing with home item placement? Not in relation to flowers but following a pattern as opposed to completely random.

mmmm I just think I remember seeing a shell displayed in some villager's table; now I'll just send them shell mail & next time a villager wants some furniture, I'll show them a shell & see if they take the bait.

& I think female villagers like to display flowers more than males, but maybe that's just my experience?

I have no idea because my villagers who have displayed flowers have all been males!

Do display: Those ugly fish and bugs that I reluctantly get them because I want my badge and their picture
Don't display: The actually great things that I try to send them so their houses won't look like a sea-bass broke in and took over.

But anyways, yeah I've definitely seen Marshal display a K.K. album in his house, so I know those are displayable. I also know that at one point Poppy had carnations in her house? But I never sent them and I got her from the campsite so I have no clue how they got there. So flowers are possible too.

I don't really know, maybe I should test this sometime. I don't really send them a round of flowers in a row, it's usually after a few more days.

What do you mean that you get ignored? My villagers always tend to reply to me... are you sending your letters within the same mail round (like sending two rounds of letters after 9 AM but before 5 PM)?

Flowers were included in my post from the start but thanks for chiming in on the KK albums. I'll add them to the "DO" list.

I feel like some items are much harder to get them to display such as music boxes and albums. When Marshal replaced his album on his table I sent him so many of the same album and could never get him to display it even though I knew it was possible. I've also sent Whitney a music box atleast 4 times attempting to get her to display it and I haven't had luck yet. D:

Fish and Bugs are also A LOT harder to get out of their house than other displayed items and I've always had to send multiple items at once to get their critters out lol. XD

My villagers have always displayed regular furniture on the first attempt though.

I sent a giant clam shell(fresh from the beach)to Prince and he replaced a bug that was on his ranch table with the shell,so they do display shells.
