I'm hoping to make my town more interesting and noticed many people are using paths, but I'm not sure where to place them. This is a picture of my town map to help give any ideas.
The way I laid out my own paths was starting to connect various buildings with each other. Train station with Re-Tail, town hall, etc. Eventually I got the design I'm using now. I can't really see what the other aesthetics of your town are like, so it's hard to give concrete advice. Do you have a Dream Address we could possibly check out?
I just make a 2-spaced path to every building because if you have flowers near paths you wouldn't want them to be ruined. I am also lining some paths with bushes, and after a year of having my current path I will probably start doing seasonal paths.... but I don't know yet
Mines new and mines bland but I like having a DreamAdress because I can get 5k just from updating and I can get insperation from others towns and get feedback on mine~
I began by going on multiple island tours and filling my pockets with flowers to take home. I looked at where I walked the most often between the important buildings (station, town hall, Re-Tail, my house) and the plaza, lining the area with the flowers. This was easiest for me to see where the path would go without having to erase all the time. Just yank up the flowers and rearrange. After that, I connected to my villagers houses. They're all spaced rather nicely, so I was mostly straight lines.
I left the flowers for a while, as I tweaked and picked a path. Once I laid the path, not only was it easier, it had a nice flower border. c:
Yeah paths can be tiring. I actually use a mix up of 2 space and 1 space paths. The 2x are brick and link major building to each other, the 1x are small stepping stones that I use to link residents or to give a more forest-y feel to certain areas. The only trick is making the texture look grassy.
Paths are a lot of work, but imo can be worth it in the end. It all depends on what paths you choose and what look you are going for. I like the paths in my town even though they are incomplete due to flower breeding in some areas. I can play around with your map setting paths, but ultimately drawing lines only gives you an idea. Sometimes it doesn't work out in game. Or sometimes there's a rock in the middle of your path that annoys you to no end *ahem* Anyway, it's up to you. I'd say pick a theme and go through some sites that have paths and find some that you like. Don't be a afraid to play around with different ones.
