In addition to laying my house out like a real house, I tried to give each of my rooms a certain theme or themes.

Back room: Study (sleek)
Right room: Outdoor area (various)
Upstairs: Bedroom/Bathroom (cabana/pirate)
Basement: Game room (various)

Mayor's House (asian themed):
Entrance/Dining Room - Center Room
Living Room (in progress) - Left Room
Bathroom - Right Room
Kitchen - Back Room
Basement - Basement
Bedroom (in progress) - Top Floor

Second Character's House (noodle/tea house):
Center Room: General Dining Area
Left Room: Sushi Area
Right Room: Tea Area
Back Room: Kitchen
Bedroom/Owner's Space: Top Floor
Restrooms: Bottom Floor
Pretty much still everything is in progress in this house since I've been focused on my second town which I restarted.

Main: Living Room
Upstairs: Bedroom

I just got a second floor and you could say my house isnt as tricked out :P

I decided to put some pictures with my explanations. Onwards!

Main room: Kitchen with living room/hangout area. Complete with a small arcade section!
spin2-1.JPG

Upstairs: Bedroom! But also a workspace with some computer desks/an art setup. There's a little corner for reading.
spin1-1.JPG

Left side: A small library/study with a partitioned off bathroom and laundry. (it's hard to get a good picture of this whole room because of the big bookcases =__=)
spin5-1.JPG

Back: A music room full of instruments and K.K. albums!
spin4-1.JPG

Right side: A simple snowman room. I just like the snowman series a lot! It's cozy. I have a little snack corner with the shelves and the snowman fridge.
spin3-1.JPG

Basement: Secret pirate hideout! Added in the gold series to make it look like there was some looting going on :D

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention my other theme house :) I LOVE Pride and Prejudice, so I named a character Lizzie and did a P&P themed house. Fireplace in every room, older furniture, Mr. Bennet's library, etc. The basement is the kitchen and I'm still working on that, but the rest of the house is mostly done :D

My mayors
Main room: waiting lounge
Left room: princess series(referred to as "guest room")
Right room: regal series (another guest room)
Back: Perhaps ballroom
Upstairs: my bedroom (rococo series) I'm aiming to get a vintage theme..
Basement: music room or library. I'm still choosing

Maid
Main room: serving lounge--aka. Waiting room. (The maids house is basically the mayors office.)
Back room: garden (weeding day set)
Upstairs: maids bedroom
Right: cleaning supplies closet
Left: mayors office.

Samurai
Main room: grand entryway with zen garden
Upstairs: his bedroom(exotic)
Back: tea room

Thief
Main: living room
Upstairs: his bedroom (sloppy)
Basement: gaming room

No real themes or anything and I change things up pretty frequently.

MAYOR's HOUSE

Main-Living room ( mixed furniture)
Left room-Kitchen ( tiny and cozy, my favorite room)
Right room-Bedroom ( exotic mostly)
Back room-Greenhouse
Upstairs-Study
Basement-Villager pics on tables ( was a mad scientist lab during October, has been a laundry room, a storage room, Rapunzel's room...I think that's it.)

SECOND CHARACTER-(just added her a few days ago)

Main room-Studio apartment, mixed ( kitchen bedroom, living area)
Upstairs-Mush series bedroom
Will have basement tomorrow, planning either a laundry room or a room full of fish tanks on tables.

Keeping the additional rooms small in the 2nd house. Only expanding upstairs to 6X6, will keep other rooms the smallest size. Not sure if I will add side rooms or not. Will definitely NOT add the back room. I don't like the way it breaks up the back wall.

If I add side rooms, will use one for a kitchen and the other for maybe a sun room.

I am wanting the second house to be more of a cozy cottage in the woods.

My house is currently in construction. I wish I had more people Street Passed so I had more furniture to choose from...

Anyway, I currently have two rooms. My main floor is fully expanded and somewhat completed. My upstairs room is new and not even touched yet. I need to expand it first, it's tiny! My home (and entire town at that) is color-themed, so my rooms have furniture of specific colors.

My main room floor is red, brown and green. I plan to move it to a different room eventually. It has a corner for eating and a corner for resting and (hopefully, once I get a red/brown/green TV) watching television. It also has a bit of a plant theme going on. Tons of plants and a sprout table... I'm not too good at designing, haha.

I plan for my upstairs room to be blue, yellow and orange. I have some furniture saved up. I need a lamp of some sort and definitely a dresser or closet.

Main - Golden
Right - Regal
Back - Rococo
Left - Princess
Upstairs - Gorgeous
Downstairs - Recording studio
over 1 mil HHA points booya

My house is only half-completed but what I have so far/my plans are as follows:

Main room: Mermaid room (mermaid set, underwater wall/floor, parts of the fish set, ice lamp)
Upstairs, though I'm thinking of moving it: Faerie room (mush set, weeding day set, jungle wall/floor, parts of the insect set)
Planned for upstairs: Princess/Angel room (sky wall/cloud floor, princess set, parts of the ice set maybe)
Left room, at the moment: Ice set storage
Right room, at the moment: The rest of the ice set that didn't fit in the left room

I'm not sure what I'll do with my other rooms, but my planned alt will have all his house set up to look like Howl's Moving Castle (book, not movie so much, because the book gives me more options)

Main- Mush Room
Back- Ice room (more of a living room)
Left- Whatever Gracie set I have
Right- Rococo series
Basement- Horrible. Part Gold, part Pave, all ugly
Second floor- Cozy room

All of this is deeeefinitely subject to change. The basement might never get better, though. I plan to make one room a pirate room, and the back room a garden room. I'm torn between having each room be a completely different theme, or the entire house be naturey.
