What qualifies a villager as "ugly"?

I've been wondering this for a while, and I'm genuinely confused. What makes a villager "ugly"?

For example, there are definitely villagers that I personally don't like the design of (coughcoughbeardocoughcough) and I would personally consider them "ugly" but I also enjoy the designs of ones considered unpopular. Are Agnes and Hazel ugly? I love both of their designs, but a lot of people disagree.

Is there a common consensus on "ugly villagers"?

Or is it more of a personal opinion?

After all, I'd call Al, the gorilla, ugly, but that's my opinion! I think Hazel is adorable, and lots of people don't agree!

So I'd like to know: do most people agree on the true "uglies", or is it really just up to your preference? I'm leaning towards the latter.

They aren't tiny and cute. For example, Judy (a cub) is considered adorable, while Megan (a big bear) isn't.

They don't have big eyes, like Roald or Apple do.

They have unique features that look strange on an animal. (Think Jambette with her big lips or Nate with his green unibrow.) However, I love Penelope's bow ears and Maelle's bob-- things some people don't like lol.

They have mean personalities. (Yes, I know some "cute" ones are mean, too, but I think people tolerate it less from an "ugly" one.)

I think these are definitely valid. I know personally that I'm more inclined to like cute villagers, even those who are rude, as I find it easier to tolerate. So I'd say these are some great points!

A lot of people have called Spork,Jambette,Tabby and Wart Jr. ugly during my years of playing Animal Crossing.Some mention Spork's whoopee cap hairstyle and beady eyes,Jambette's ginormous lips,Tabby's....well,everything and Wart Jr.'s unfortunate skin condition.I think it's a matter of art reflecting real life because people tend to dwell on physical traits that they deem to be abnormal.

It's funny but the first time I saw Tabby wasn't in the game but right here on TBT.Another forum member put her up for grabs and posted a screenshot of that smiley cat and when I saw her I knew I had get her for my New Leaf town.

an ugly villager is hippos (exept merangue) croocodiles all mice all frogs (except lily) all tigers all pigs all monkeys all squirles (except marshall and ione) all goats and all cats ( except ankha and raymond) this is just my opinion

For me, I find all the lions ugly, and most of the villagers with makeup (lipstick and eyeshadow though there are a few that I like that have some eyeshadow). The makeup thing is more of a personal dislike thing; I find the villagers look weird with lipstick. Violet, Rocket, Ally, Naomi are the ones that I find to look the worst. I don’t like the lions because their heads looks so huge and their designs just look weird to me.

it's 1000% personal opinion. there's a few villagers i can think of that are wildly popular that i personally think are ugly, and you know what? that's okay! i don't have to have those villagers on my island!

Same, I'm not a fan of lions or the makeup, it looks kind off. Though I do like Kitty who has heavy eyeshadow <3

It's definitely preference. And maybe personal experience with said villager who has wrecked havoc in their town or village.

Poor Megan. I find her super cute but Judy scary (but not ugly).
Id say it comes down to personal preferences. But there have been studies done about what kind of features in general humans find cute.
I find Beardo as interesting. Maybe slightly cute due to him being a bear, and bears are cute, and that is his only feature of cute.
And I love Beardo.

It definitely comes down to visible features more than anything. It’s been mentioned already, but little stuff like Jambette’s big lips (and her having the normal personality over snooty), Hazel’s small eyes and large unibrow, Barold’s lazy personality and stubble, Cole’s teeth, and so forth are enough to dip overall popularity. Basically, if the villager’s facial features do not resemble Dotty’s in their at-rest expression or are a larger-sized villager, don’t expect them to be too popular. I might sound like I’m over-generalizing, but looks do play a large role in how the average player picks their villagers.

Also, I hate to make this comparison, but it’s similar to what someone may heavily consider when looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend. Any relationship counselor will tell you that looks should not be the biggest factor in finding someone. Rather, it’s who they are and how they act that should matter most. It’s the same thing here. A minor blemish on a villager might have you not like them, but what about their personality? Is it one that you would like? If the answer is yes, then see how they do in your town.

I kind of went off the rails there, but I ultimately think that minor blemishes are big reasons for unpopularity, and it’s a simple human trait for one to not like a villager overall just for that.

Social media's opinion. I don't think any villagers are ugly, I think it's just plan rediculous even towards a fictional character. It doesn't matter what they look like if there's even one hair wrong, one tint on a tail, eye size. It's just a group of opinions that follows

But when, I think Reddit is the worst one. When their all over a villager, people seem to follow, or it makes people seem ashamed of whoever they have.

I'm thankful open complunitunites like this form arnt as toxic as some.
