What makes villagers hold items?

For example, since I put a food dispenser and a soda dispenser, I saw them hold donuts, soup and more food items

Is it determined by furniture that you put in town or it was just coincidence?

as far as i know its a coincidence my villagers are eating donuts and stuff but i dont have anything like that placed in my island.

I think it’s just a coincidence, but I could be wrong! Most of my villagers just hold smoothies most of the time.

I always just thought it was random. So I think it's a coincidence?
I don't have those items placed on my island and my villagers often have soda, tea, sandwiches, donuts or lollipops.
