Like the shape landmark locations/ ponds and river shape? I'm thinking about getting a second animal crossing game to make a themed town. and I wanna make sure i have space for everything unlike my personal town( this is my first AC game so I had no clue).

I think my map is pretty good. A straighter river will give you more space and using the villager trick will let you choose where they go.

In terms of aesthetics most people like their town tree close to the center of the map.

If you go beetle hunting a lot, a Re-Tail closer to the beach is more convenient, although it only takes a few seconds to walk to and fro even if Re-Tail is near the tracks so I personally don't think it matters much.

From my map, I find that having one large stretch of beach instead of being cut in the middle is easier when fishing for something specific.

all the maps i'm getting on my 2nd copy re-tail is in like a corner

It's all how you utilize the space. I mean, some maps are probably more preferable than others. I have villagers all throughout town, my house in the center, but my tree is to the bottom right. Personally I don't mind much.

I'd have to agree. My town layout isn't the best but I've made due with what I have and personally I've grown to love my town layout.

I'm still resetting (haha... I just can't settle with anything but this one particular map....) and my criteria are: I want the beach on the right, I want a windy, curvy river (there's one river layout I like best...), I want the "lake" to be in the top left or top right corner of my town, I want ReTail in the bottom right corner near the cliff, I want the town plaza right under the town hall (not thaat important), I want one ramp in the bottom left corner and the other one in the bottom right - it's not suuuper important and if I like a map where the ramps are placed differently I won't reset... but this would be really cool.
Ah... and I'd love to have apples, a blue or red train station and a blue or yellow town hall.

Whoa. I'm super picky, I know... but heh... I'm gonna find my perfect map xD
I know a lot of people don't like super curvy rivers, because that often means less space for community projects... but with this particular layout it doesn't feel like there's too little space...

Soo, basically... it's all up to you. Check out some maps, walk around etc...

I only reset once. On my first try, the maps were just terrible. On my second try, the first map that popped up was perfect for me. I went into the game thinking 'I need a vertical waterfall, town hall above my plaza ect ect.' but when I saw this map with a horizontal river and everything, I knew I had to get it because the space was crazy. So much room. I knew other people reset for days for a map like mine so I took it and I love it

Personally, I really like my town layout.

Sure, everything is all over the place, but I have one huge stretch of beach and Re-tail is right by the dock for easy bug selling. All my major stops also seem to be concentrated into one area, so I'm pretty pleased with the one I got. Also, oranges :p

LOL I've found perfect maps the only thing I really want now is for the native fruit to be apples

I really enjoy my map, don't have my 3DS in front of me to show, but it's got a river that runs right through the middle - very easy to get around.

I was lucky though and just went with the first map choices I had - resetting just seems like it would take the fun out of it. Adapt and overcome!

For me, I really wanted as little ponds as possible(idk, don't ask lol). The river is ok I think, but my town took a while to get used to. I mean, I love my town map now but I'm sure I could have found a better map!!

I have room for everything, just a lot of trees and ugh. The villagers are on one side, which I love. :)

I guess a good town has a nice division of land.Nothing crazy like a river that flows in a weird path like curves.A straight river is nice.
